Apache bytes transferred error?

Apache 2 is reporting more bytes served than ifconfig shows were transfered. For example, yesterday apache 2 served 1.7GB, but ifconfig shows a jump of 357MB in eth0 tx bytes. Is apache lying?

Are you compressing your output? (mod_deflate or mod_gzip). I don't know if apache counts pre or post compression.

No compression, it's mostly video files with 200 (ok) and 206 (partial content) response codes. I initially thought the 206 response codes didn't get counted, but the bytes from the 200 response code alone add up to about twice what ifconfig says was transfered. Somebody's still can't count right.

Apache byte counts from daily logs appear valid compared to the filesizes served. There's something about the kernel's tx bytes not including all traffic going to the network. I'm really curious if anyone else gets similar results. CentOS 4.1, Apache 2.0.52.

I also notice ethx stats sometime get reset. Maybe ifup/ifdown did that, or overflow to the counter.
