HT or no HT

Hi, I have dual CPU (Xeon 2.8 Nocona) server. The machine is running apache with php, mysql, ftpd. Is it reasonable to turn HT on or off? What will give me the best performance?

From what I remeber it is not a good idea to run Hyper Threading in a production hosting environment.

Why... I can not remember.

Google it...

It all depends.

We have servers that are HT enabled and it is running smooth and fast. It is really depends on what application you are running. You should monitor it, enable then disable to see the difference.

Turn it off. Hyperthreading is a security risk, and provides little if any benefit in most server environments.

HT improves latency at the expense of throughput, which can be a nice advantage in some environments. Nothing you mentioned is latency-sensitive, so leave it off for better throughput.

HT is in fact of a very little, negligible security risk and can give you a visible performance grow in hosting tasks (running a multiple processes at a time is a requirement for them).

I recommend to turn in on.
