SHould I get Sky+ or build a media centre PC?

Dear all, but probably UK users mostly,

In a recent post I mentioned about building a linux based Media centre pc. I've been looking into it a bit more and not seen a great deal of decent linux software. So I'm having second toughts - I might even use windows MCE instead (arrggghhh!).

Anyway, just wondering whether I should bother at all or just go for Sky+.

What do folks think?

Which would be better?

Sky+ is amazing. You won't find a better PVR on the market. Everything is fully integrated and so easy to use. Cheaper to set up too I would of thought, and I believe you don't have to pay a monthly fee to use it if you have one of the top packages.

(I sound like a Sky salesman don't I!)

I've never used SKy+, just read about it. But from what I see the difference between a Sky+ box and media centre pc is that SKy+ wins out on the telly recording features, whereas a media centre wins out on the range of features, such as music, radio, internet, images, etc, plus being able to record to DVD directly.

Im with Steve on this one, Sky+ - once you have used it you will never go back and it will change the way you view television forever, believe me!

I have had Sky+ for just coming up to a year now and no longer am I restricted by television schedules, it really is like having your own television channel!

Also, no adverts hehe. The only problem is, as I said, once you get it you will never ever go back. And when you are at someones house who does not have, you urge to press rewind and watch things again on the television.

In fact every now and again something happens in life (like the cat does something funny) and I think rewind - then i remember its life I can't

The only thing I regret about getting Sky+ is not getting it sooner.

Apparently if you phone up Sky and ask them to do you a reconditioned unit, they will do them for £49.00 now instead of £100.00. Reconditioned boxes are complete with a full year warranty and are usually just boxes that have been rejected by the customer at the time of install. They usually offer them to people whose boxes have died out of warranty but my mate got one without this. It may be worth it as a lot of the boxes they are giving out are the Amstrad variety, which are not as reliable as the Pace boxes (most reconditioned boxes are Pace, but they are rolling out the new Pace PVR3 now so you may even get it on a new box nowadays).

I have an Amstrad box and in the past it has suffered from software problems every now and again (typical Amstrad crap) but since the last EPG update there has not been a single problem so maybe they sorted it now.

Either way, its life-changing so I would highly recommend it!
