Sun's sub $1000 X2100 Server
Just saw the following article about Sun's launch of a AMD x64 based entry level server. They'll be selling custom or standard configs so you could buy a complete barebones setup to install your own components or a standard one with ram, drives, already installed.
It can run RHEL 3,4, Win 2k3, Solaris 10..
The design and chipsets they picked are all great choices and well engineered. Should make for a very solid low-mid range server for web/mysql hosting.

http://www.sun.com/nc/05q3/products/
Costs range anywhere from $500 - $2k depending on quantity/config.
Looks like a nice option compared to low end/mid range HP Opteron servers.
I'll need to get some firm quotes back to see how competitive it may be to typical choices for this price range like the Dell PE 1425SC.

I am also exploring replacing our current line of low end Dell Dedicateds with the X2100. I hope to have quotes by morning on how competitive they can be.

We've quoted ours as well. They look very promising and come close and sometimes beat our Dell quotes.

Sun's site shows the X2100's may be shipping now? Anyone have any real world reviews? Why did it take them so long to start actually shipping this unit?
I'm particularly interested due to the hot swap SATA drives and great price and I'm assuming good build quality.

looks like Sun has seriously revamped their pricing on these models. I remember seing unbelievable prices on these servers a few months back, which required you to purchase a bundled os/support program that was a good $700 if not more. Guess someone at Sun finally figured the ultra-cheap deceptive advertising didn't convert to sales.

How much are they willing to discount? I may consider them if we can talk them down a few notches.
