Help Needed - Server gone wild

Hi there!

I am totally out of clues

My server has gone totally NUTZ on me and not only that, everything in it has gone crazy too.

Let me tell you what kind of server I have and etc 1st.

I have a Dual Xeon, 1GB RAM, 2 80GB HDD
The server is running on Fedora Core 1 (Yarrow)
It also has cPanel installed and running.

Here's my problem. The server is basically only serving 1 HUGE site, which is a gaming site. Eg. Tips on games, Discussion on Games and etc. Nothing to do with playing games there.

Anyway, I do not know what happened and where the fault lies but as far as I know, when the site is up, the load for the server (TOP), gives at least 20 to about 45, which is rediculous. It only has about 100-200 people on the site at 1 go, nothing great.

When I suspend the site, the load goes all the way down to about 0.XX which is kinda a known fact.

Other than that, everything seems to be failing and going down very often. Previously, it was just the HUGE load, we did nothing much about it. Now, it seems that even when the site is suspended, httpd, eximstats, ftpd and etc seems to be failing.

Previously, it was just that when there was too many people on the server and the load goes too high, things start failing but now, even without ppl on the server and etc, everything seems to be failing.

I don't even know what the hell to do or to think of anymore.

Could someone out there who knows what he's doing lend a helping hand? It would be very much appericiated. Our site is not a profiting site and it's just as a hobby, so there's no money involved.

Please help if you could.

Thanks.

I would hazard a guess that your site is running phpbb, and your phpbb has a lot of pages indexed in google ?

Check your web server logs.

There is a phpbb worm doing the rounds yet again, and it took down a site I admin earler today for about 15 minutes. Our server is an AMD 3000+ 1G ram, and we only were showing around 100 users online.

You need to slow that sucker down - get mod_security installed on your server, and ask me about the simple rules I put in that stopped it in it's tracks (for me)

Hi RRWH,

You're wrong bro, The site is actually running vBulletin and thus phpBB is totally out of the picture. I'm not even sure what the hell is going on already. It's really really getting on my nerves and it's seriously getting to be a pain.

I've tried doing all I know/can and yet it's not entirely working.

Frustration is all I can say

If no one else has helped you, I can take a look at it for you.

I'm experience in optimizing servers that use vBulletin.

PM me if you're interested.

After looking at the server, it's coping pretty well apart from the insane 'recent threads' box on the homepage which takes about 2 - 3 seconds to compute (not surprising on a 700Mb forum database).

iowait is at 0% - I'm surprised this server's coping so well given its load, actually. But dual CPUs really would help in this situation.

As would lighttpd.
