Sport :: The Ashes ~ England, Australia, it's all come down to this, win draw or lose
Article extract >>
England kept Australia guessing about the make-up of their team on the eve of the final Ashes Test at The Oval.
James Anderson or Paul Collingwood will replace injured Simon Jones, and skipper Michael Vaughan admitted it would be a "tough decision" to make.
"Simon will be missed. But it creates an opportunity for Jimmy or Colly to make a name for themselves," he said.
Collingwood was hit in the face during net practice on Wednesday but carried on after treatment to his nose.
The subject of who should replace Jones has been the main talking point since he withdrew from the squad on Tuesday after failing to recover from an ankle injury in time.
Australia captain Ricky Ponting expects Collingwood to be included, primarily to add extra depth to England's batting line-up and improve the fielding.
But former England selector Rod Marsh believes they should stick with the tactics which have carried them to a 2-1 lead in the series.
"They've done very well with four pace bowlers and I'd be very reluctant to change that," said Marsh

The series is going right down to the wire. People who weren't previously cricket fans have been caught up in it.
A newspaper here in the UK is asking everybody, those at the ground [The Oval] and elseewhere to sing "Jerusalem" at 10:25 tomorrow morning. In an effort to show the English team taht the nation is behind them, if they didnt' know already.
I feel it is only right for me to post the words here so people know what to say.....or sing.
Jerusalem
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.
The Scots still can't bring themselves to support the Englsih though from what i hear.
I know that my comments aren't exactly impartial but i'd like this to be a global thread. I understand that The Ashes ahs been big in South Africa, New Zealand, Inidia and the West Indies and not just the two countries taking part.

Come on England! I can't wait for it, lets beat those damn Aussie's once and for all! I just loved seeing the likes of Ricky Ponting walking off the field shouting "Cheats!", they can't take losing, for the simple fact they are not used to it, lets burry them!

It is 16 years since England had a hold of the most prestigious trophy in cricket, for 16 years they have failed to beat the World champions, Australia, to The Ashes, a small urn containing the ashes of one bail from a cricket stump.
But, after 4 test matches, we are 2-1 up, and the 5th and final test just got underway.
If we draw, we win The Ashes, if we win, we win The Ashes, if we lose, the series draws at 2-2, but Australia, been the ones who won it last, get to take it.
At 10:25am, the country came to a standstill as the weeks of England, slowly becoming cricket crazy, stood and sang Jerusalem, in tune with the packed Oval cricket ground. Offices and shopping centres came to a halt as people stood and sang. Like many others, I had a tear in my eye!
It's come down to the final match, can we finally beat them? We'll know in a few days time.
So far it has gone well, we won the flip of the coin, which was always going to be a crucial factor in the games outcome.
Come on England!
For those over the pond, if you can get it on TV over there, watch it, it will go down in history as one of the best matches in history, trust me, you won't be disappointed.
There will be blood, there will be anger, and there will be pure comedy as the Aussie bowlers play their usual mind games with the England attack.
Lets go get 'em lads, lets show them that their 16 year winning streak is over!

Bloody Shane Warne
I'm even more glad nwo that we've picked Collingwood to come in for Jones instead of Anderson, he's decent with the bat and will hopefully get a run waul.
Let's see Strauss stick it to Warne who's been winiding up all series.
We all know what Peterson and Flintoff can do.
If you didn't know it was gonna be tense before, you do now. *fingers crossed*
A long way to go yet, calm and assured, that's what all Englishman have to be, at The Oval, in the office, at home e.t.c.
ENGLAND!, BARMY ARMY!!

Hey! no need for that!
But seriously, it's good to see the enemy appearing in this thread. So, how does it feel to be losing?

Lucky, and there's bound to be a demand for it.
And then there are the flats overlooking the ground being rented out for £20-25,000 for the week.
