I am looking for a new host

Hi all. I am new here and new to hosting a website. I am not really happy with my current hoster. Their servers are extremely slow even with pictures and onMouseOver images.

Due to the fact that my site has movie clips and music and a very special focus I am looking for a very specific hosting plan/company. What I am looking for is (Sorry for the long read):

*) Would prefer to deal with just one company for domain registration and hosting but this is not essential
*) Must have php and mySQL
*) I would like a large amount of disk space (looking for more the 1GB to start off with) to hold my movie clips and music
*) Large monthly bandwidth because of movie and music content but also I envision a large number of people comming to my site
*) Servers must be fast for uploads and downloads to handle movies. My current hosts company cant even handle images fast enough.
*) My current budget is around $10 a month for a trial period to test your server speed and also until my site can make enough money to upgrade to higher plans.
*) Would also like to hear from specialised streaming server hosting companies
*) Must provide all the other basics such as emails, domain and page forwarding, phpMyAdmin, etc

*) I do not want to deal with resellers of hosting plans

Any advice on how to get movies to be viewed faster for the client side would also be greatly appreciated

Sorry again for the long read

Hope to hear any suggestions soon

BTW no my site is not involved in piracy what so ever

Hi,

I'd recommend you do a search in the offers section or try using the host quote feature on WHT, be sure to do a search for reviews of host on WHT etc.. good luck.

Your budget is good enough for 1Gb space.. maybe hostgator is suitable for you..

Your budget is good for 1 GB of space, but what do you mean by a large amount of bandwidth? If you're looking for 20-30 GB, then you'll probably be okay, but any more, and you'll probably run into problems.

Once you do what hoobastank said, also remember to send test support questions to the providers to test response time and quality of response. Also since speed of downloads is important to you, be sure to ask for a test download file

http://whreviews.com/ has some very good reviews on reliable hosting companies, I think you should read over them and find a suitable one for yourself

Best of luck with your search!

Good to hear it's not essential, because in fact it is safer to keep your domains separated from your host. You just never know what can happen. Some domain registrars that have some fans around here are Godaddy and Namecheap.

If you prefer to register your domain name separately, I would highly recommend Namecheap.com

Yea, these are all really good options.

I personally prefer Enom, but then again...if you are just looking for a few domains, there are cheaper ways to go.

Another great way to select a web host it to go through this very thread. See what people like and dislike about hosting companies. Be sure to search the reviews of any hosting company that you are leaning towards, as this can be a great way to uncover possible issues in support, server speed ect. before you become a customer.

Bandwidth can add up pretty quickly when you are going to be doing movie and music streaming. You may want to do some analysis to figure out the size of files you'll be streaming and the predicted number of visitors per day downloading/streaming those files. You may find that the controlling factor will be the bandwidth even if <1 GB is good enough for you.

I'll echo the opinion to maintain your own control of domains. Too many stories of relationships going south with web hosting companies or domains not being renewed. It is so easy to manage your own domains and it is so cheap to buy them that it's a no-brainer to do it yourself.

Happy hunting.

thanks DevilDog

I plan to hold quite a lot of videos. The videos im holding aren't actually that large, the majority being under 15mb with runtimes averaging 30seconds. Not sure about number of visitors but I am aiming for a few hundred a day eventually. Dont know how long that would take to build that much traffic but gotta aim for the stars

sounds like you may need to spend a little bit more if your looking for media hosting. You will prob need a good amount of BW. Your best bet may be to stick with larger well known companies if you are worried about getting on a reseller account.

best of luck

You would probably need to spend more than $10/month, and I believe a managed VPS account would be better than a shared. The latter ones may cost around $50/month.
Look around for hosts with a good reputation which have accounts of that type.
