ATHLON 64 3000 for Server
Hi all,
After working on a vps for a while i decided to build my own server.
I searched for dedicated server plans and contacted with my possible server home about this. They provided 2 plan to me. One of them 1U server and the other is atx.
1U servers are expensive for me and i decided to try atx plan because i think with atx plan i can build better configuration for less.
Anyway, here is the list of my possible dedicated server content;
ASUS A8V (K8T800 PRO,GLAN,SATA,RAID,S939)
AMD - ATHLON 64 3000+ 939 VENICE
POWERCOLOR 128MB ATI Radeon 9250
Seagate 80GB 7200RPM 8MB SATA
TWINMOS - 1 GB 400 DUAL
COOLER MASTER - RS-450-ACLY
AOPEN KA50D-D007
This dedicated server will be used for webhosting. My os will either freebsd or centos.
This hardware list created with the help of Martin Cracauer from bsdforums. I think i wont have problems with freebsd.
Waiting recommendations/comments.
Thanks

In terms size of the casing, ATX tower PC is at least equivalent to a 4U server. consider the price difference between 1U vs 4U server monthly colo fees, u will want to choose 1U server.
actually dell 1U server is really cheap, you may want to consider.
and i think u don't need to install a graphic card as this going to be a server.

Thank you neorder for your reply.
The price difference between 1U and Atx is 30$ per month.
I added graphic card because there isnt onboard vga on asus a8v.

You don't need quite such a highend graphics cards. Most servers that don't have onboard have 8, 16, maybe 32 megs of video ram. Be sure to get something that is known to be compatible, as many of the older cards will be. The 939 Athlon 64 3000+ is a solid chip, it's what I have running in my home computer. You get the SSE3 extensions with it compared to the older 3000+.
That being said, I agree it's silly to have a tower PC when you can get a pretty cheap 1U system from Dell or elsewhere. If you ever have to move your server to a different colo, they might charge a lot, lot more for a tower and then you'll be out of luck.

If your paying $30.00 more for an ATX custom made, why don't you just find a host that rents dells, with custom options.
Let me explain why in most situations this is better..
1. hardware failures.
In case of a failure the place renting the box is most likely to have the parts right there to fix promptly. Whereas in your case, you'll have to order parts and whatnot, and or pay top prices to the NOC to order it and wait for it as well..
2. they know the hardware better, support will be better prepared and have the solutions to most all problems.
3. Price difference these days is not much, you'll be paying $50-100 month for your server depending how beefy you want it. With it being in their control if anything goes wrong, there's no additional costs, so if your spending $1500 on a system, then you are getting 15 months rental. Is your computer, going to be worth anything then? no, and most likely you'll want to upgrade or move on at that time.

Renting or leasing servers is quite dumb IMO. However...it is very convenient with people who run less than 5 or so servers and was for me. However when you start to get more and more servers it just not beneficial to lease or rent servers anymore due to various reasons, one of which is cost and the other is the easy of upgrades. Plus 4-5 years down the road i got hundreds of door stops versus walking away from renting them and I got nothing.
However, the whole process or ordering them, building, configuring is just a huge pain in the butt. I swear on this last order I made on the 9th which all of the parts are still not here, EVERYTHING that could have gone wrong did go wrong. So it just depends if you wanna deal with stuff like that or get a server setup instantly.

You might be living in the past.
While I agreed on this 3-4 years ago, colocation was where its at...
This is not so true with todays technology, Most colocation providers, don't even support or care for their colocation people anymore because, its just a pain in the butt for them and they're high school grad minimum wage techs.
Being in the system the past 12 years, I wouldnt blink an eye for a leased server at $50 a month
Here's a tip! The inside trick is after 12-15 months of leasing hit them up, you may earn a discount as you paid for the server already.
Since the average colocation client is under 5 months, (believe it or not) don't expect much unless you have a contract, which we all hate to have

Why do you say the average colocation client is under 5 months?

Well if colocation clients only last 5 months. How long do people rent dedicated servers?
