Green green newbie

Hi folks,

I have been a participant on a semi-public forum for quite a long time. In the last few months, the primary administrator on that forum has become rather abusive and insulting when posting (also, either the site has been obnoxiously hacked recently, or the admin is taking liberties with some of the members' profiles). The forum is fairly large but specific in scope.

I'm now wondering if I have enough knowledge to start my own forum. Up until recently, I have enjoyed the discussion and exchange of knowledge, but I've had enough of the rude and abusive behavior by the admin and a few other individuals.

What do I have to know to administer a forum? How do I start one? How much should I expect to pay? Tell me what I need to know!

Thanks!
farmgirlMO

Thread moved to Web Hosting Lounge. It seemed to me like the best place to discuss such a thread with a wide scope such as this one.

I would agree.

Welcome farmgirlMO , as to your question - if you could kidnap Jan and Dennis (anon-e-mouse and SoftWareRevue), the admin at the forum here then you could have a forum for free!
Why pay for software money when you can by some handcuffs and an ak-47 instead!

On a serious note:

1) Get yourself some free hosting
2) Get yourself www.phpbb.com and install that
3) Then you have a free forum which you can custimise as much as you like

If you would like to know of some good free hosts then send me a PM as I know many who accept forums specifically.

Jord

Welcome to WHT farmgirlMO.

Get some hosting, perhaps some free hosting to start off. Get a message board (phpbb, vbulletin, etc...) and advetise. Most of the forum work is public relations for the most part and adding features people would want is always nice.

Some legends lead to that assumption.

Starting a message board can be quite difficult. There are so many forums online these days.

A few things to consider - are you alone in the problems or do most of the other members agree with some of the problems? Sometimes - with the admins, they might be a bit worn down from time to time running a message board. It takes a lot of hard work.

I do not want to tell you not to do it - but just be prepared.

Instead of starting your own message board, you may want to consider just joining another one who has the type of people you like typing to.
