How to change CHMOD in Win2003?!

I wanne set chmod to 777 for a specific folder in Windows Server 2003. I've used different methods, but none successfully.

First I tried folder properties in explorer. The "read only" box is checked, and when I uncheck it, it pops back into "read only" mode. This could be the error, but how do I fix it?! Then I tried in IIS, but everything looks good there. I have full access for "Everyone" in the security settings. I tried FTP, and successfully set the CHMOD to 777, but a second later it's back to 755... God Dammit!

Can someone please explain to me how I can set CHMOD 777 for a specific folder in Win 2003?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Joakim

Chmod is only for Linux. To change permission in Windows 2003 you need to go to that specific folder, click on Security, then assign the EveryOne full permission.

YOu really don't want to be granting Full permissions to the Everyone user. That is a recipe for disaster.

If this is a live web server then the first thing you do is remove Everyone and Users permissions. Then set up and assign specific users and groups as required, or let your CP do it.

Anyway, as for original request, Right-Click the folder and select Security and then teh user you wish to assign permissions for. You can then assign Full for a specific user. If you are running a default install of Win2k3 and IIS6.0 and it's a web folder you need to amend then you need to give access to the IUSR_MACHINENAME account, where MACHINENAME is the network name assigned to that server.

If you have specific users set for each site then you'll need to grant for that user.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I did some reconfigurations of my user permissions, but I already had full access for IUSR_XXX. But the permission problem persists.
One problem, that might be the cause of the whole thing, is that the folders are set to "read only" mode, and I can't turn it off. The check box is grey... Or, I'm sure I can turn it off, but I didn't find out how.

Anyone who can help me crack this nut?

The grey is because you allow inheritable permissions to propagate from the parent directory, just click on the Advance tab to disable that.

Anyone who can help out with the grey boxes? I have the same problem on all my HDD's..

I have no idea why, but I can't use Remote Desktop through internet anymore, just through internal network. I get connection through internet, but it says that my password is wrong.

What is going on?!

jhannisdahl,

Sounds like this could be a bigger issue, and looks like you’re needing more that just permission help are you sure your network has been setup correctly before continuing further with the web server and permissions?

I'm 99% sure my network is set up correctly. I have opened port forwarding in my router, no problems there. And the rest is pretty much "plug-and-play".

I have never experienced these kinda problems before. The trigger was when I tried to set permission "chmod 777" for my upload directory. It didn't work, so I tried all sorts of other settings. Then remote desktop wouldn't work through internet, and I can't figure out why! And I still haven't found out why I can't uncheck "read only" in folder properties. There's no "read only" checkbox in the root folder properties (rightclick on C:\), something I believed was there... That's the main issue. I haven't really used that much time to figure out why remote desktop doesn't work, yet..

Any suggestions on how to fix the "read only" problem?
Any comments on the remote desktop problem?

I really appreciate the replies I get here

Hi,

Can you describe how your network is currently setup, and I am assuming you are using IIS for the hosting aspect, correct me if I am wrong.

Also, is your network using a domain controller of any type?

What error do you get when you attempt to remote desktop? Also, are you attempting to remote desktop to a server or desktop computer, and can you from dos prompt ping the computer you are attempting to remote desktop too?

This should give us some idea as to where we can start to look

My network:
Router
Switch
6 different computers, including the server

I have not installed any domain controller. Frankly, I have no idea what it is, and have never used it.

I'm using IIS 6.0.

Hehe, I solved the remote Desktop problem. There was a domain problem, combined with a port error in IIS, so never mind that one guys...

And the pinging is no problem. I'm doing work on my server as we speak. And my webserver/mailserver is up-and-running. It's only the god damn problem with the "read-only" box...
