What is a reasonable price for bandwidth
I've noticed that most colo companies charge more for bandwidth than they do for dedicated hosting. I've seen rates between $1-2/GB/month, which seems like an awful lot compared to what it costs for a dedicated server.
What is a good price for bandwidth for a colo server? What do you want to watch for? I've heard some people comment here that some companies have better bandwidth than others (for example, I've read negative comments about WilTel).
Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice, or recommendations on good colo companies.
Thanks,
David

It really depends on the bandwidth mix/providers, since bandwidth pricing varies among the Tier1 and Tier2 carriers.

How much space, how much bandwidth, any preferred location? Then we can give you estimates

I need around 100-200GB/month, probably 1U of server space and I want the server to be anywhere in the US outside of California.

At such a low level for space and commit, $1/GB for transit is not unreasonable. However, you could probably find better deals, and I would consider anything in between $75-$150 a "fair" deal for 1U and 100GB.

I think Jay is right on with the pricing. At such a low commitment you'll have a difficult time breaking into the lower pricing range you see on dedicated offers or with higher commitments of 5+ Mbit or more.
That's not to say some hosts won't have good deals on colo BW/space, but the $75-150 typically is what a fair deal will run.
It may be a better option to go with a dedicated server rather than colo depending on your situation if you don't absolutely need a colo'd server, or don't have it already. You may get the bandwidth significanty discounted even at a low commit of 100G, semi or full management included, and the server included.

We have an interesting situation in that we already have a rather beefy server we are looking to use...and lots of free software for it.
But if 175 is standard, than 175 sounds good : )

Some will beg to differ, but co-location really should not be billed "per GB." The going rate for high quality bandwidth is realistically in the realm of $50 - 100/Mbps.

Was just going to say that Jeff ... if you want to talk about pricing of bandwidth, you need to talk on a per meg basis.
$40-60/mbps is probably a reasonable rate in my mind, of course it does depend on commit size. I'm referring to a 100m commit here.
