I just wanted to know from some customers who have servers with Layeredtech if purchasing one of their dedicated plans is a good idea?
I've read some mixed results about their support and quickness of response. But those posts were a while ago, so if anyone has anything to add about whether or not their support has improved or worsened, please post!
well, they're an UNMANAGED provider, so support really isn't that big of an issue. the only time I have to deal with support is if I need a reboot for some reason, and those are usually taken care of pretty promptly.
I bought a FreeBSD machine from them late on Sunday night. It was ready on Wednesday. I locked root out of it by adding a new user (not in wheel group) and removing the default LayeredTech user, then rebooted before setting up sudo.
They added my new user to wheel in one hour, and apologized for the delay.
Considering how busy they probably are with the current sale, I consider this very good support from an unmanaged provider.
Ive had good and bad experiences - but im still with them and overall im happy there. They grew very fast in a relatively short period of time and I think due to that they were caught off guard. But overall they've got that sorted now and running a good service.
If you have already or do decide to go with LT then I think you'll be happy.
I have had a server with Layered for a year and never had a problem with uptime, except when my server was hacked into and they worked with me to clean the box up. After that I hired Fast Server Management and the two work together well. I recomend Layered highly if you want unsupported servers.

Actually you do pay for support if you have an unmanaged server with Layered. They want $75 an hour to work on the box.
$75.00/hour sounds like a fee they charge for unsuported work, meaning something that would be included in a managed server. They DO offer support for their servers without a charge. Once you request something out of their support reach, you will get charged.
