MySQL 4.1.x to 4.0.x downgrade help required

I want to downgrade a few databases from mysql version 4.1.13-standad to 4.0.24-standard, since I have to move some accounts to another server with another web host.

The problem lies in the fact that the mysql 4.1.x database tables have character set and collation settings (latin1, latin1_swedish_ci).

This can not be set the same way in mysql database 4.0. So normal export using phpmyadmin from 4.1 and loading into 4.0 does not work, all data is showing in the wrong characters.

Even though there is an option in phpmyadmin export page with "SQL export compatibility" setting that should me export 4.1 tables to 4.0 or 3.23, I'm not sure whether there will still be issues or not. Has anyone else tried it before ?

just mysqldump, then vi the dumped sql file and do a global replace to get rid of those collation.
