Could it be better if governments had complete control over the Internet ?

Ok here I was thinking what if governments owned the major pipes to the Internet, just like they own roads. Taxpayers money would be invested but bandwidth pricing would go down and every single citizen would be connected to the net. I know it's too late now but just wanted to know your point of view.

Edit: I think this thread would be more suitable in the lounge, sorry I'm a little slow tonight.

Probably wouldn't work too well considering most tax money goes to the military. I think governments already own over 50% of the IPv4 space, correct me if I'm wrong.

    J-P,

You must have great roads over there.
The govt. can't properly handle anything - they keep "losing" 2 billion a year in HRDC, money going missing, etc.

Do you really want them responsible for a network? If they want that they can make their own.

You have a valid point, I think that question is also valid for electricity.

    J-P,

When they can safely manage my money that I hand over to them every year (for the advil I got at a hospital for my broken sternum, for sitting in a waiting room with a friend who had slit his wrists for 8 hours, for all the great potholes we can drive on, etc...) I'll consider giving them more to expand on the interweb!

    Until then: Privatize, privatize, privatize.

Note to SigmaRan: Myself and J-P are Canadian - there is no money spent on military here. At least not a worthwhile amount to defend an iceberg let alone a country from a real and growing threat (interally).

Give the government more control? That would be crazy.

Who do you think is responsible for the Internet? The U.S. government. I don't think it should be controlled by the gov't, but give credit where credit is due.

Hey guy just incase you hadn't notice or forgot or sumthin. WWW The World Wide Web with the emphasys on WORLD WIDE that is it's world wide so no one country should or could own it.

Personally I think it should be controlled by a large world wide movement of independent small companies that uses the Internet extensively.... Porn. As Porn and the associated health industry generates more traffic than any other group they should be the ones to control it.

After all that's the democratic way, and certainly would show that free speech and free expression is alive and well.

governments shouldnt have control over the net...

imagine this if korea and the usa were to have a major disagreement... it would affect the whole network... and a bad scenario is someone in the usa types "yahoo.com" in the browser and it takes them one place and if someone in korea types "yahoo.com" it can take them some where else...

with the disagreements we have in the world today... its gonna reflect on the net... and create major segments... its good as is now...

Ask China if they like government controlled internet.

Service would be SO increbidly crummy if the government owned and ran the infrastructure and be much more expensive.

Criminy, its cheaper for citizens to pay commercial garbage collectors to pick up your trash than it is for the city to do it and the private contractors do a better job and pick up the trash more often. Picking up trash is simple compared to the Internet.

BIG NO. In India, if internet will be owned by Government of India then it will be major major problem. Government employees here don't know anything. Hell they even don't know how to setup their email accounts. I can only imagine amount of chaos it will create if control goes in hands of such corrupt dumb asses.

If there would be fair, just and honest goverment that has only people's best interest in mind then I would like them controlling everything, but there is no such goverment around.

The Internet has been around a long time since before the WWW. The www = http (just one protocol on the Internet).

    just a snazy name really..

no to governments running things - the internet would work less well as they'd all start having to get peering agreements between eachother. they'd also be able to tax the internet a lot more/a lot more easily

leave it as it is - it works

Also, what does disaster smell like?

Good to see that us Americans are not the only ones who can't trust their governments and/or think they are retards.

Like they said above, it wouldn't be very good because the goverment sucks at handling things.
