    Managed Dedicated Server Anywhere :-/

    Hello Guys,

This is going to sound extremely nooby so bear with me. I am looking to move out of the area of reselling webhosting as small low price extra to a low spec managed dedicated server.

I have had enough of oversold reseller companies and looking for a managed dedicated server box with some form of linux (only had basic experance with RedHat) with CPanel/WHM. It will only hold around 20 hosting accounts which would be only my company website and clans.

It doesnt matter weither its a US or UK server box either.. Price wise around $100 would be suitable as a high spec server box is not required. I started to look through the offers forums but not one company had a definition of "managed". Im not going to lie but I only know the basics when it comes to Linux. My partner is the expert in Linux but I wouldnt like to rely on him when he is not in the office. ie: why I would like a managed dedicated server.

I have done a search and found alot of companies willing but tbh quite a few dont have any form of WHM feedback or very small.. I dont want to make a mistake and have to move around when i find out the provider cant hack it.. You know what 13 year old gamers are like when they find there clan website is down :-s Hope someone could point me in the correct direction.

    Chris

every company have its own definition of "managed" word.

for low cost and managed servers, I'd recommend interserver.net

Are these fully managed server boxes and have you/are you hosted/use them?

Your going to have a hard time finding a managed server for $100. My guess you should consider $130 to $160 and then you should be able to find what your looking for.

Thats not a problem.. Budget is expandable if need be

Low End Server Box... Lets say:

    XP 2800+ or P4
    512mb or 1024mb Memory
40GB + HardDrive (ATA, SATA whatever)
    10mb Uplink (100mb is a plus)
CentOS from what i have been reading but open to suggestions
    CPanel + WHM
Free Reboots (either by APC Panel or Email is fine)

I'd say for about $140'ish you should be able to find a server config similar to what you're looking for with management at a reputable datacenter.

that's just a ballpark figure though.

I think www.servstra.com managed offers can suite you and your budget well. They offer managed servers on the Linux platform with cPanel/WHM

Id also reccommend servstra.com. Been with them for awhile now and they never fail to impress.

At the end of the day its not for gaming, voip or streaming, its just for some small clan sites and my company website. As long as its up 99% of the time and the bandwidth does the job then you cant go wrong.

No at ways the truth.. I currently rent an $80 dedicated US server and it out performs a $150 server box which was the same spec.

Anyway LT servers are unmanaged anyway :-/

Savvis is great bandwidth; Servstra & dedicatedplace both resell for LT, which is unmanaged. Both servstra & DP are managed, and are at LT.

Personally if you want managed. Get a LT box and tack on cheap management with serverwizards at about what $75?

I like the option but technically the LT box I am looking at is around $100 at LT and then have to add CPanel and Management on top or I can get the same server with DedicatedPlace for roughly the same price (some cheaper/some not) and then we get the management on top.

At the end of the day I will most likly will just take the jump, rent a managed box and see how it goes. If its crap then I have learnt my lesson. Every company has its merits and disadvantages so i think i might just take the risk and big the bullet. Heck its how i found RedBus 2 in the UK...

If you contact a provider that you are interested in, they should be able to provide youwith their definition of "managed" services, letting you now what they will or will not do for you. Different providers have different ideas of what "managed"means, and don't make assumptions with out finding out up front what exactly that is...

Also be sure to ask if they will login and run patches & updates automatically when they come out, or if you need to open a ticket every time and specify what you want done.

In the latter case you will still need to know how to run a server so you know what is out-of-date and what needs updating.

You will find though, that most "managed" providers don't do this work automatically, and will actually want you to put in a ticket and request the work you want done.
