Speed Test please - Hivelocity 50mbit

    http://206.51.233.125/test.test

Please could you mention where you are downloading from and your connection speed.

This is a 50mbit server but i can usually only push 20mbits. I can get it to push 35mbits if i do multiple file transfers , server to server.

My Users complained that they were only getting 80-100kb/sec on a single IE connection. I tested it out with two of my dedicated servers at theplanet (100mbit) and alphared (50mbit) using wget and got speeds of 350 kb/sec.

After opening a ticket i was simply told the speed is slow because it depends where you download from. An explination i am not happy with. Yes speeds are dependant on location but a 50mbit server shouldn't be reduced to 4mbits whilst doing server to server transfer with a 100mbit server, and Home users shouldn't be getting speeds of 1mbit and less on a near idle 50mbit dedicated server.

I am hoping with your help i can get some results to prove my case.

Thank you for your help and time

On our Alpha Red AboveNET network, here is the speed test:

    root@server975 [/home]# wget http://206.51.233.125/test.test
    --21:36:51-- http://206.51.233.125/test.test
    => `test.test'
    Connecting to 206.51.233.125:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: 181,426,825 [text/plain]

    0% [ ] 1,754,548 126.91K/s ETA 23:11

Are you running something on it right now thats using your bandwidth?

No nothing... current output is 5mbits. Server load is non existant.

Edit : Just restarted it and current network output is 0.5% So there is nothing else using the bandwidth apart from that testfile

80kbps from Comcast in SE Michigan.

Definitely not a hi-po server - the network is throttled to "Joe User". I can get 300 - 400kbps from most any server with a good link.

EDIT - Just a note, the transfer starts off very quick and then throttles down. It really looks like your provider is limiting tranfer speeds.

Thank you for your help peeps appreciate it. My ticket has now been escalated to a senior network tech, so hopefully this will be resolved soon.

Kakashi is using Windows , are you having the same issue with a HV server ? If you are please pm me your details and I would be happy to have a technician look into your issue as well.

It turned out Kakashi's issue was something to do with his webserver on the machine.

Yes i am using windows 2003

The problem as it turns out seems to be with apache, on the windows server.

Apache 1.3 ( default config) was giving 300 - 400 kb/sec between servers ( as results above show)

    Apache 2.0 (default config) was giving 1.1 - 1.3 MB/sec

    Abyss Webserver was giving 300 - 400 kb/sec

    IIS was giving 2.2-2.4 MB/sec.

I have 8 other windows servers and this is a first for me.
Still quite baffled to be honest, but at least the problem was not with the hardware.

    Great support.
