Do not share server with root access

I was about to reply in another thread but realise that I should not post unless I am interested in sharing.

It is not a good idea to shared root access to a server with someone you do not know. It is more trouble than anything else. Below are just a few:
    - Root password can be changed without each other's notice.
    - Server owner can do anything he/she wants, as that is the only person the server provider will listen to.
    - Non server owner can leave with huge bandwidth bills for the server owner to pay
    - and so on......

Get your own, if do not wish to pay all the money that is needed, go with shared hosting. There is nothing wrong with shared hosting. Need root access get a VPS.

Agreed as well. I would not do this with anyone other than friends (with me knowing where they live).

Just seems like common sense. I wouldn't give a stranger the keys to my porsche, even if he made me the incredible offer of paying for half the gas.

Agreed, you'd have to be barmy to share a server and share root access. A VPS would be the best solution in a scenario like this.

I suppose you dont include server administration services. In that case you have to share the password or I'm wrong?

Note: When you leave a car for maintenance, usually you leave the keys too.

    1. car shop ain't going nowhere

    2. you can bring police to car shop and bust owner's keen if owner try to screw you

    3. you can track down the owner

i won't trust a stranger off of WHT/Internet to share a server that i use to generate money. i won't even share a game server.

    too much risk.

Sharing a game server probably isn't that bad, think about all the gaming clans that do it. As long as there are not too many people who know the root password, its probably not bad. You could always restrict certain users, too.

Or do you mean sharing a server where you sell game servers?

But I hope you all would give root access to a system administrator, even if you dont know him directly (i.e. web companies).

Else none of you would ever take a full managed server for example....

I hope you take a fully managed server from a provider you can trust.

One should not equate a full managed server provider with sharing a root access server with unknown.

I dont speak about "unknown people" but about a web company that offer system admin services. I think they are "unkown" like a company that offer a dedicated server.

I hope you don't give root access to your production server to anyone that offer server admin services without research and recommendation.
