    * DIY vs Vortech vs JodoHost vs WebReseller vs ??? - Decisions Decisions...

Jeez i never thought it'd be so difficult to narrow down a search for a new hosting provider... been spending heaps and heaps of time reading these forums, visiting websites, printing, making notes, sending emails, etc etc etc... but still seem to be hours away from a decision.

Anyway, here's basically what i need (minimum) for my reseller acct:
    - HSphere - windows and linux
    - 2gb / 20gb
    - 7 users (customers)
    - 24/7 support
    - overselling
    - end-user support
    - mssql

I have been spoiled by the tech support i'm getting by my current host, and would like to continue to be spoiled... but it seems this might be impossible. Here's what my current host does for me:
    - installs scripts (dotnetnuke, community server, even new ones they haven't used before)
    - helps to troubleshoot when features of 3rd party scripts dont work (server related they're a great help)
    - fix configuration faults with control panel (proprietary so they have to really)
    - advice to improve performance etc
    - transfer files from old server to theirs

So i'd really like to find a hosting company that will at least install scripts for me... such as DotNetNuke, MamboServer, Community Server, etc

Also, if they'll transfer my files from my current host to their servers, that'd massively help me in the transfer process.

Other than support, i'm looking for rock-solid performance... thats my main problem with one of my current hosts... too many problems... servers running slow, having to restart asp.net all the time, sql server going down regularly, etc etc... their support is fantastic, but their servers arent. i'm hoping to find best of both worlds, and i want to do it right first go, as its a time-consuming process to move, and i'm hoping i'll do it now and then not again for at least a good few years.

So, i'm after user advice, and server representative comments on the abovementioned items, mainly from the following shortlisted hosts, and any others that can compete:

    - DIYHosting
    - MatrixReseller/ Vortech
    - JodoHost
    - ZoomReseller (why no HSphere??? )
    - Webreseller.net
    - Any others i shouldn't overlook??

Sorry about the longwinded post... its an important move and i really want to do it right.. hopefully the answers (especially from host reps) will be helpful to many others out there in their decisions.

    Cheers,
    Greg

Their service may be okay, but if honesty and integrity, and lawful billing mean anything to you, then your best bet is to stay very far away.

The right choice will be Jodohost the price is a little high but the servers are good and the support is the best!

Thats some big calls Extreme... can you justify any of them?
Have you used all of these servers, and can you tell us how you came to this conclusion?

Pricing-wise, out of my 3 shortlisted companies (DIYHosting, Vortech & JodoHost), Jodo is the cheapest.. so how do you come to the "Price is a little high"?

Sorry to probe, i just think if you're going to make big calls like that, you need to be able to justify them. Please feel free to PM or email me if you'd like to discuss this offline.

    Cheers,
    Greg

Thanks for the warning DeadSerious... crossing WebReseller off my list now. Thats exactly the sort of feedback i was after from here.

Something else that is quite worrying is this:
    www.vortechhostingsucks.org

... anyone got any comments on this?

I find the site useful and funny at the same time. Well it would be useful if any one ever really posted there. LoL Look at the long dates from post to post. Oh but be sure to skip the ones he lets spam the forum for porn sites.

Done, thanks... WebReseller is officially off the list.

Now, can an administrator maybe remove "WebReseller" from the title of this discussion, as it wont let me do it?

Okay, I've sent presale queries off to the following 3 hosts, with the following results:

    1. JodoHost:
    - quickest to get back to me.. within a couple of hours
    - very flexible and helpful - not so set in their ways that they won't consider 'bending the rules' slightly to help out. i like this
    - eg: they'll install scripts for me, transfer files to help make the transition easier, transfer/ restore databases, etc
    - negatives: no Urchin stats. everything else seems great

    2. Vortech:
    - second quickest to respond (around 4 hours to respond)
    - good service, very clear concise answers to questions
    - not very flexible in support, eg: will NOT install scripts for me, will NOT transfer files to make transition easier, will not transfer/ restore databases for me, etc
    - perhaps a little to inflexible for my needs.. i like a host who is willing to go out of their way to make my life easier, and in the process win my loyalty... vortech not doing so well in this department so far.

    3. DIY Hosting:
    - 15 hours since sending presales query, and still no response... hmmm and i thought they'd be quickest judging by pricing (most expensive of the 3).... dissappointed with this one.

I'll keep the board updated with progress... this is an interesting little exercise really.

    Cheers,
    Greg

Just letting everyone know i'm hoping to set up an account this weekend... so if Jodo/ DIY / Vortech want to come in and add anything, now is the time

And if there's any other companies out there that want to come in and sweep me off my feet, now would definitely be the time for that!

    Cheers,
    Greg

Well just to clear things up. We sell reseller hosting, meaning we don't really deal with our Customers Customer. So that is why we don't install or move there sites for our customers.

If you have a dump file for a database thats to big for phpmyadmin we would be happy to help you with it. But we give all the tools really needed to get your self setup and moved.

Also the 4 hours, if that was to sales not bad, but give the people you will be talking to a shot. Email support I bet a reply in less then 30 min maybe less then 10 min at anytime of the night. 24/7

We really don't move customers files for them though.

I think I answered your ticket, it was kind of long and some of the stuff if the right ticket really does not fit us, so we might not be 100% right for you I hate to say it, if us moving files for you is a deal breaker. Maybe Jodohost, DYIhost have a bit more free time.

BTW if you have not read my other posts, one thing we are is very honest with our customers.

    Hi Vortech,

thanks for the extra info... i was happy wtih the response time - i didnt say otherwise.

Regarding moving of customer's files... that is a deal breaker, as it makes my life a whooole lot easier. keeping in mind its just one off - once they're moved, and the domain transferred, there should be no need to do it again.

still considering you guys, i just feel that a little more flexibility in your approach to support would go a long way. but maybe i've just been spoiled by my current host, and my expectations are abit too high. ahh well, i can aim for the stars, and hope to land nice and softly on the clouds somewhere.

Gregorius, I went over your sales email answered by Gurmeet. It was a long one hence the 3 hour lag.

We have true 24x7x365 chat available (both sales & support). I'm sure you'd find them very helpful. I am sure you'll find alot of positive feedback on WHT and on our forums regarding support.

Yes we do assist customers with script installations or transfers during their first month of service. After the first month, we do reserve the right to charge our standard hourly rates if the task is very time consuming. Very rarely will any such task require more than 10 minutes of our time and we do try to encourage our customers to perform such tasks on their own if possible

We have also installed EasyAPP on our servers so it will allow you to instal 20+ scripts without you needing any sort of assistance from us.

Oh, this is nothing new from Vortech. I will say no more

We are sufficiently staffed and lay emphasis on customer support. Our main sales strategy is keeping customers happy and they refer new customers to us.

Not because we have too much free time

And that is the attitude i look for in a company i do business with. My current host is just like that.. they go out of their way to help me, and that is why i've stayed wtih them for so long. Unfortunatly they just don't have the infrastructure to offer a reliable enough service for my clients.

Thanks Jodo, u'r looking good so far... and the cheapest too

  18. #18
Jodo, will you be getting Urchin stats as soon as its available for HSphere?

Does anyone know what the holdup is with that?

Will there be a charge for it?

Urchin is on the upcoming list. I can't comment on pricing, but whatever new services we add have always been reasonably priced

We have other upcoming projects which have been made open for debate in our private forum. You can of course request access to that and gain an insight on what we have in store for our customers over the next several months

being cheap is relative. Some consider our services expensive, some consider it cheap.

As far as we are concerned, our packages are priced for value, but ensuring we can maintain very good levels of reliability and customer support.

Id say this is a little harder to find when shopping for a reseller provider. If you already had this sort of service from your current provider, why are you thinking about switching? (I apologize if you already mentioned this, but, if you did, I missed it while browsing through this thread )

Gregorius - go ahead with Jodohost. You can't go wrong with them & the pricing is really reasonable.

Because their servers are unstable, sql server goes down regularly, DNN sites run extremely slowly, control panel has bugs, etc. Support is great, but its not enough on its own to retain customers. Great for a development server though!

    And the winner is....

    JodoHost!!!

I signed up on saturday, and have transferred 2 sites across successfully... signup was quick and painless. They even called me in Australia to confirm my details.

I have already made a few support calls (both online chats and tickets) and they were very quick and efficient in helping me resolve problems.

HSphere is VERY VERY complicated... taking ages to work it out, and i can tell its gonna take forever to tweak to my satisfaction.. i might just create new plans for all my clients for now (without billing), and start using billing features later on. Anyone got suggestions about starting out with HSphere?

So far big thumbs up for Jodo. I'll keep you all posted about how it all goes, but so far i'm a happy customer.

Thanks for all the advice in this thread - it really was a big help in making this decision. I do hope its the right one and i dont have to move again in a long long time.

    cheers,
    Greg

It's good to hear you are happy with our service.

With regards to HSphere, did you read our step by step guide? It simplifies things significantly

Yeah i read the guide and followed through it... would have been completely lost without that!

Its just tweaking the billing side of things, but as i said, i'll start off with no billing for current customers (as all plans are different), and just create separate plans for each one.. then as i expand and start to offer online signups etc, i'll integrate billing.

Unless somebody can suggest a better approach?

What you are doing is fine.

HSphere gives you alot of control and flexibility. But yes the trade off is that the learning curve is a little steeper and would require a few hours of your time to truly understand.

I wrote the step by step guide myself, 2 years ago and it did take me quite a while. I did cover all billing and plan basics. More is in the reseller guide (check our help page). Our forum is a very good place to get startup hsphere advice and I don't think I've seen you around

Thanks Vortech... much appreciated. No hard feelings from me, i guess i was just sussing out what the support services are like, cos when it comes down to it, that is the main differentiator between hosting companies. Jodo just seemed more flexible to me, which is what pushed them over the line in my eyes.

And yash, you're right, i havent visited the forums yet.. not time as yet.. maybe this weekend if i can... workign my *** off on finishing a project atm, so setting up HSphere is second priority right now.

    Cheers,

I've been with Webreseller since Aug 2002, and my business has grown 800%+ since doing so. Their reliability and support is amazing, and why I have the confidence to sell more services and why customers keep referring me to their friends and associates. For every bad thing you'll hear about them, you'll also hear 100 good things. Generally, people dont make effort to post the good things, but I will. I've had way too many bad hosting experiences. Anxiety-ridden, migraine-starting experiences, and that all ended with WRS. They deserve all the positive reviews they get.
