someone's connecting to your mysql server
login to your server and run
    Code:
    SHOW PROCESSLIST
    to view the whole list

    nothing in processlist:

[email protected] [/usr/src/mytop-1.4]# mysql -uroot -ppassword
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 164 to server version: 4.0.24-standard

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

    mysql> show processlist
    ->

i guess 70.85.***.*** is not your ip, right?
does your mysqld listen on external interfaces (e.g. ethX) ? does it have to? looks like someone is trying to connect/login to your mysqld server and is pretty persistent, 920 connections are a lot

    any suggestions what to do?
    this is killing my business.

mytop now display correct enteries, but this only last for 10 minutes, then it begins with the "unauth" user enteries again.

Make sure that you firewall the external MySQL port. (Only allow those who need it to access it. Also, check for local processes which may be trying to access your db.

seems my server admins fixed this
going to ask them what they did and reply here (might help others if they have or get similar problems)

They added --skip-resolve-names to mysql startup parameters.

Thanks to ServerWizards for fixing this
