After seeing Dual going to 300 on ebay for a week. I started searching for Quad. Quad final bids are only between 80-200. Why Quad cheaper? Because they took too much space, too heave to ship, or difficult to manage than Dual? Does Linux/FreeBSD/Windows support Quad?
Originally posted by xing Most likely the quads that you saw on ebay are comaq machines with old cpus, or god forbid cpus that require special ram such as rambus. There seems to be a lot of old compaq servers on ebay.
Most of today's dual CPUs kick the pants of even last year's offering especially with the dual-core products.
Compaq 6400R Quad Xeon P3 500M is made in 2001?
Some Dual PIII made in that year like IBM 1550 is sold for 350 or more.
I am very interested in the 6400R: only 4U, Quad. Is that a good machine to use at home?

The only thing making noise in any machine is the moving parts. IF something is too loud, most likely you can replace the fans to more quiet models. The only things that you cannot change are loud SCSI drives, so do the research on the db output of the SCSI drives included with the machine.
The noise level is really just dependent upon what kind of fans are in the box, so it's hard to say what model would be best to use
