Not really a surprise that he didn't know the answer but more that they were asking me when they were clearly moving into the game server market and should have known a few of these things before laying down bricks..
As X-gaming has pointed out (seems to do that a lot eh?) if I was moving into providing dedicated servers aimed at gamers I would either:
1. Know everything I could abot gaming servers.
2. Pretend I knew everything I could about gaming servers.
This may seem like not too big of a deal as the VP does not need to know much about how to install a gaming server, but if you wanted a host that had no idea what was going on with game servers why not simply going to the parent company (in this case ThePlanet.com).
Insomnia365 does not really seem to be offering any killer deals and if you are intersted in a server from them I would look at ThePlanet.com as well.
I have had no personal experience with Insomnia or DefconServers.com, these are just my thoughts from the thread
I think insomnia is a joke, costs lots more than a normal tp server and for what? a file system and start stop control panel? I have a couple of clients who where with insomnia and saidthat for support they had to ask freinds and other people as insomnia support where clueless about gameservers.
I've used TP and ServerMatrix before, so when I heard about Insomnia365 I decided it was probably worth a try. So far, I've only had one issue with a UT2k4 server, and their staff have been working hard to resolve the issue. I will say this about ThePlanet's support system; their response times are normally lightning fast and they're not afraid to get their hands dirty.
If you're looking for an easy game server solution, I would at least give I365 a second look.
Well considering you could get a Dual Xeon 2.8 w/ 2gbs Ram for under $200 and then lease a CP for $15 per month it doesn't really make alot of sense in my eyes.. The same machine at SM with a CP that does 1/4 of what most can do would cost you almost $300.. Not to mention you are locked in at thePlanet..
According to TP this project was aimed at GSP's which is odd since most of the GSP's I know have multiple locations so it is not feasible to use their product when you could buy/rent/lease a much better CP and it will scale across your entire network..
It is a great marketing gimmic for TP but not practical for anyone but the casual gamer or clan that needs a noob friendly enviroment.
For a GSP to use this thing would be plain stupid for all the above reasons and the all important cost as well..
Cost : $269 (Dual 2.8 @ TP)
Figuring you put CS servers on th machine which everyone and their cousin seems to only know.. You would need 10 servers on each box to make back $300 (selling them at $30 each which is average..). Now factor in your billing software license and maybe a support desk license @ $20 a peice x 2..
You just made $10 for working a few hundred hours..
Agreed X-Gaming, after some more research and a big dose of Google I am finding Insomnia 365 is not worth the giant price tag. A cheap P4 dedicated and webmin can, with X-Gaming's example, make the equivilant of Insomnia 365 (only not as pretty).
Anyway, to each his/her own.
