How much does location matter?
I have a weather sensitive site that has big spikes in traffic (up to 20GBs in a day). Most of the traffic comes from No. California. I'm considering a host in Texas. Does the host location have any significant effect?

If it stays in the US it probably won't make a big difference. Texas is a centralized location but if you get most of your traffic from Northern California I'd aim for as close as you can get to your target audience.
Patron: I'd like my free lunch please.
Cafe Manager: Free lunch? Did you read the fine print stating it was an April Fool's joke.
Patron: I read the same way I listen, I ignore the parts I don't agree with. I'm suing you for false advertising.
Cafe Owner: Is our lawyer still working pro bono?

As long as its in the US It should be fine, but a server on the East Coast as compared to one on the West Coast can make a difference even if not too much

In the same country, United States, should be ok. Once it's out of the country or across the globe thats when visitors would experience delay.
It depends on the host datacenter.GenerousWebHosting.com Home of Generous George the Red Monster.

I'd definitely say that a location within the US is OK. Also, although I live in Europe I get excellent speed with most US-based sites.
For instance, I have a site with Micfo (Texas) which has a quite fast ping time from my location.
