I'm not trying to start a true webhosting company. But very similar. We want to be able to host our own sites we have and template sites for clients. So it is a webhosting but no need for the fancy features, such as giving FTP access, or MYSQL access. All my clients will need are websites, email access, webStats and i think thats it.
Anyways. I have a Windows 2003 server. Hosting Controller. and SimpleDNS. What I want to know if anyone can give me some sort of an outline of all the steps I'd probably need to go through. Or even point out a website that will tell me. Anything! Not even sure if this question makes any sense. But any help what-so-ever would be truely appreciative.
Hi, I wish I had a lot of information for you, but I don't. The reason I'm responding is to ask whether you are using an ISP that allows you to run your own web server. I was considering hosting my own site (for my own personal use) on a web server at home, but then I read ... ehhhh ... re-read my broadband provider's policies which state that I can't run a server using their service. Not wanting to get my service cancelled, I stopped considering it.
There's also the huge issue of security, as there is with any web server, and whether you're willing to apply the MS patches as soon as they come out or wait a while before applying them. And there's the issue of hardware backups and power outages... are you ready to deal with them? And are you ready to deal with undesirable outsiders trying to get into your web server?
All of these things should be heavily considered before embarking down that road you're looking at, if you haven't already considered them.
