British Island Invaded: Chicks Eaten alive

    Giant mice eating rare seabirds

    Jul 25 2005

    Paul Carey, Western Mail

SUPERSIZE mice on a British island are eating seabird chicks alive, a wildlife charity warned today.

The house mice, three times the size of those in the UK, attack at night and are devouring more than a million petrel, shearwater and albatross chicks on Gough Island every year.

The island hosts more than 10 million birds.

Dr Geoff Hilton, a Senior Research Biologist at the RSPB said, "Gough Island hosts an astonishing community of seabirds and the catastrophe could make many extinct within decades.

"We think there are about 700,000 mice, which have somehow learned to eat chicks live, much like blue tits learned to peck milk bottle tops."

Just saw this story on a Seattle news TV broadcast. Quite the mouse problem. Yikes.

Anyways getting on topic here I do not know if I could live where so many mice are in one area. Heck I hate it when I see just one mouse running by in the woods .

No doubt. Quite the problem. Usually followed quickly by disease, or predators. Natural selection at work I guess.

I'd be more than happy to hunt the rats for the British government as long as they pay all my expenses and 15 pounds / rat.

well of course rats/mice are from the Murinae subfamily.

I've killed probably 8 rats this year because of that damn sewer line they put on our side of the house and have 2 more to kill.

I know its nasty, but it must be done.

OK, lets leave WHT peoples families out of this discussion. K?

Besides, where you get, or what you eat is your deal.

I'll be over around 10 PM tonight -- will you save me some?

hehe, the british government will just need to send webdude and I over and by the end of the week that 700,000 rat population will be lowered to more like 550,000.

on a sidenote we could take the dead rats and send them to eastern countries since in some countries its a deliacy like cat and dog.

  23. Phew........I thought i was the only one.

Seriously, I had the picture of barberians/cannibals getting out of their boats to devour hot chicks in bikinis tied to some kind of pole on the beach in UK.

I think we might need to call on our Kiwi friends for help, or at least copy their methods.

    See :: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4724821.stm

I think i heard either this case or one like it being used as an example oexample of how to tackle it, when i saw a report on BBC World covering this story last week.
