    Accurate "hits" counting

Im basically trying to implement accurate hit counter into my script. Story.php which displayed different news articles/etc has a counter which counts the amount of views that article has received. The only problem is that it goes up by one each time the page refreshes, either by F5, or when the user votes, or posts comments on the story (both of which work like a refresh). Is there any way to get around that?

why not use a session and track them by IP?
if the same IP hits your site on the same session, disregard it.

Or set a single-session cookie with a list of stories that they've read this visit.

I'm not sure what you're asking, do you want to just count unique visitors or actual hits?
