Thumbs down another very annoying thing with Affordablehost

If there was an email sent about this or an announcement made over at webhosthelpdesk.com, I did not see it.

Anyhow, when I first signed up the account almost 4 years ago, I was emailed that the cPanel login URL was <server>.affordablehost.com/cpanel
It turns out that they changed it to www.<domain-name>.com/cpanel while keeping the other login URL active as well.

Not only had the cPanel login URL changed, so had the FTP address.

I found this out quite by accident today.

I went into phpMyAdmin using the old cPanel login URL to change a simple entry in the database table. Went fine, but when my script went to access the database, the change wasn't there. Odd. I couldn't understand it. Then I tried FTPing a simple HTML file, again using the FTP address given to me in the sign-up email.
When I went to my web browser to view the HTML, I was told the file didn't exist.

Then, I decided why not try FTP address of just <domain-name>.com, and that worked. And when I went to the new cPanel login URL and used phpMyAdmin to chang the database, the edit finally went through.

Stuff like this can drive a customer crazy!!!

    edit:
an announcement was made on their website
in the past, customers would actually get an email about something as important as this but now we have to check the announcement board constantly; I think I'll be leaving when the contract is up.

I'm very confused as to why this would make any difference.

Is this making sense to anyone? I know myself when I login to my website I use the full server name and my domain name interchangeably.

I'm not sure, but I think what happened is they moved him to a new server and he wasn't directly contacted about it. So when he tried to go to servername.affordablehost.com/cpanel - he was going to the old server, while his domain was live on the new server.

Yes. That is exactly what happened.

There was a topic on their website mentioning server migration.
I was spoiled by the email updates that I used to get when Tina and her staff ran the show. So, I was caught off-guard by this.

When I owned affordablehost.com, we always sent out mass notices via the billing system to the email address on file there for just about everything. Didn't they send out a notice telling everyone to check and sign up for the announcements? If not, I can imagine the confusion and anger.

People should always be able to connect using: http://domain.com/cpanel/
    Much easier to remember.

A better way is to use a secure connection: https://domain.com:2083/
    Much faster and more secure.

Yes, they always have been able to. That's not the point.

The point is that they have also been able to connect using the servername - and affordablehost.com moved him to a new server without telling him WHILE it was still accessible via the old servername. Caused quite a bit of confusion. It would have been easier to reroute the old servername to the new servername, so that both servernames would work...in my opinion and experience.

Unless the customer has an SSL cert for that domain, they will get a certificate mismatch warning.

SSL can be a bit slower since it has to encrypt and decrypt all packets, good idea none the less though.

    Self-signed, perhaps?
