Serious Computer Problem

Recently, I ran Ad-aware, after I noticed I had some spyware on my computer. After I had deleted the spyware, I noticed my desktop images had lost there pictures. When I double-clicked on the icons, they told me they could not open. I've had this problem before and ran the .exe regedit ( http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm ). However, now, when I run that same edit, it just opens up my Notepad with the data. Is there anyway to fix this problem? Will Windows Recovery work? Or do I have to do a format?

-David

It looks like all extensions, and it's throughout the computer. Nevermind, Windows Recovery, I can't open it.

Would you mind posting your boot.ini file?
C:\boot.ini

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Not sure if that's what you wanted. There is no boot.ini located at C:/boot.ini .

Thanks, tech, but this is a much more serious problem. I can't open anything besides Mozilla Firefox, nothing knows what to associate itself with.

Yup that's right! Sorry, I gave the exact location.

Follow these directions if you wouldn't mind. Probably spyware, just want to be sure

Please download HijackThis http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/HijackThis.exe - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Well I wish I could, but I can't execute .exe. This is so weird, before I just ran that reg fix, but that just opens up Notepad. I think a reformat is becoming more and more obvious.

I had the same problem before, and it was the boot.ini file. Hmm.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/exefile.htm Is that the fix you tried?

Nope, I can't right click, it tells me to go to Control Panel>Folder Options to fix. However, when I do that, there appears to be nothing that can solve my problem.
