We need about 20 Gb of disk space to host an oscommerce site selling downloadable MP3 lectures. Single domain, will not be reselling. Looking for a host that is reliable and reasonably priced (aren't we all??) Don't know yet about bandwidth needs, but if the site becomes profitable due to lots of downloads then we'd also need a provider that is reasonable about rates for more bandwidth.
I heard great things about site5 and saw that they have a 12 Gb plan for $17/month. But when I inquired about 20 Gb, they said I'd have to go with a reseller plan and that would jump to $70/month.
I'm currently using resellerzoom and am very pleased with their stability and rates. But hostingzoom told me that I'd have to combine two semi dedicated server plans (10GB @$64.95/mo times 2) = $130.
I'm also using varhosting. They offer 20 Gb for $21.95 but unfortunately I'm not so pleased with their uptime. (Which is why I moved to resellerzoom for some accounts.)
I guess what puzzles me most is why there is such a discrepancy between 10 and 20 gigs!
Often times reseller accounts are more expensive than the shared hosting ones. A reason for that is that resellers tend to actually use what they buy, while shared hosting customers will leave larger chuncks of their allocation unused. Also, sometimes the shared hosting plans let you host a limited number of domains, while reseller accounts let you host (virtually) unlimited, or at least significantly more than a shared account does.
Actually my puzzlement relates to why a 20 Gb plan is 4 or 5 times the cost of a 10 Gb plan and not less than twice the cost. I can't imagine that hosts are still using low capacity raid arrays (e.g., 74 Gb) per server instead of sans.
Exactly Dan. The issue is overselling. They can't do as much with resellers which means less profit margin per customer hence higher prices per month. Also, with resellers, since they have more people on the same space and bandwidth, the number of support issues that arise increases.

20 GB space.... sounds like a VPS plan here. Well, for instance, I saw InMotion Hosting offers managed VPS for $50/month.
They have a good customer reputation, according to my research. Also had an account with them some time ago, and no problems then.
