I thought so too. The only advantage I knew for the Opteron against Xeon is the speed. Is there something else that I'm missing?
Oh, yea, it's going to be dual CPU.

Opterons are 64bit processors that are backward compatable with the 32bit world. I'm assuming the Xeon you're comparing it to is a 32bit version? What's the cache size on the Xeon and the speed of both processors?

I'm thinking Opteron 244 comparing to Xeon 3.0

244, keep in mind in most cases HT actually harms performance (database)

Also keep in mind that many small writes (such as DB updates) are the worst-case-scenario for RAID5. RAID1 (2 drives) or RAID10 (4+ drives) will give you much better performance.

I'd go Opteron.
