All kinds of pie are great -- apple, cherry, blueberry, apricot, blackberry, strawberry, rhubarb. They're all unique, yet their crust is what unifies them all.

I've always wanted to try a proper cherry or pecan pie but we don't have them in Australia

Bah. How could I forget pumpkin and pecan pies? Let me iterate that what I listed above is not a "pie bible," but just an idea of the sorts of pies that exist.

Pennsylvania Dutch, Shoo Fly Pie.

You must know what a chicken pie is? And a shepherds pie etc? Do you all just eat dessert pies?

The same point I made previously. A pie doesn't need to be a dessert... they're just called pies down this way (the Pacific), regardless of whether they're meat or dessert or whatever.
Shepherd's pie is mince with potato on top.

Mmm, turkey.
Well at least you learned something new - people with different dialects interpret things in different ways!

Cheese and onion pies have got to be the best - closely followed by Chicken pie. In terms of desserts/sweets it's got to be good ol' Apple Pie.

Why is cheese and onion pie disgusting?
Anyone who has ever eaten quiche was probably eating cheese and onion pie, with or without other ingredients.

Can't pick just one. Top 3 would be lemon meringue, cherry and apple. Pumpkin is a very close 4th place. (Cherry and apple ala mode and pumpkin with some whipped cream on top)
My hubby is nuts for chocolate pie w/whipped cream.

For me to get a good 'aussie' pie here in the US I have to drive for over an hour to get to this place:
http://www.australianpieco.com/
Good pies though (taste like 4and20's). It's also the closest place I can find Vegemite and TimTams at.
As for the thread's question though:
Australian pie: Beef, Bacon & Cheese
American Pie: CherryFormer Webhost... now, just a guy.
