How do I prevent people pinging my server through command line?
I run a Windows 2003 Standard server....just wondering how we can prevent users from running command line entries to our servers.
Such things as tracert, ping, etc.
Ive seen some servers where you try to ping it but you get a TIMED OUT.
Does anyone know how to set up a Windows server that way? Step by step instructions would be great.
You block ICMP traffic at a firewall. You could set up a hardware firewall, or just run a software firewall on your server. (Not sure specifically how on Windows.)
Just don't try to ping it to see if it's up... Because you won't be able to.
I'd recommend against blocking any ICMP traffic at all. You'll improve network reliability, and allow upstream routers to determine if traffic is actually arriving or not. If you do block ICMP, at least block only echo requests.
