    Newbie questions about Dual Processors

A few questions about building a dual processor server - I've never done it before and don't know much about it. Don't give me any speeches on it being better to buy one - I want to learn! So, that said.....

Can I buy a dual-processor motherboard, but only put 1 processor in it? Also do both processors have to be the same if I put two in? Is it really THAT much of a difference (I assume yes!)

How big of a power supply should I make sure I have?

    Thanks to all!

Q: Can I buy a dual-processor motherboard, but only put 1 processor in it?

A: Yup, dont know if they have to be in seperate slots ie in slot one to work but apart from that it will work.

    Q: Same type

A: Yup down to the stepping version and speed otherwise they can just basically melt :p

    Q: Powersupply

A: Depends what else is going into the box

Correct me if I'm wrong but the same chipsets could be of different speeds.. for example; (1) 2.8 Xeon and (1) 3.0 Xeon, however, it would generally be a waste of money because both processors would run at 2.8.

This won't work. The different processors have different multiplier locks, so the system won't POST at all.

The processors need to be of the same speed, FSB, voltage... Ideally, you should have two processors that were produced in the same plant at the same time.

I concur with the other posts.

The cpu MUST be the same clock / FSB / cache / voltage. Otherwise the bios will trip and it wont boot.

The process needs to be the same. IE : .90NM or .13NM

Other than that, you should be good to go if youre adding in another CPU.

The ideal way to add in a second cpu is to buy it at the same time as the primary cpu. If you have multiple servers running with a single cpu, you may use that second cpu in any of those servers (if all purchased at the same time).

I hope this gives you some insight about adding in a secondary cpu.
