What can the companies know about there resellers?
I’m curious about this: if someone gets a reseller account from another company…will the company that offers him the reseller account be able to know how many customers/clients the reseller has and what space/bandwidth they use?
Please forgive me if this is a silly question, just very curious.
I guess he was just being curious. I mean, I too would not want my host to be sniffing around my account, regardless of whether I'm using the reseller's account to make money ie reselling or just hosting all of my personal websites.
Nothing, I’m not registered with any provider for a reseller account, just curiosity…because what about if the provider have access to my account and see me clients information? This will not be very good for me and for my clients.
Maybe this was a silly post, but just wanted to know.
I don't look through my client's personal e-mails to keep up on the gossip, but as a host I am required at least moraly to check up on what is going on with my machines. I keep an eye on the files, browse through directories to snoop for anything that could be wrong, etc...
If I was to do reseller hosting it would just be part of server security as far as I see it. If your host is honest, there is no real problem with them looking through your client's accounts to check for warez, porn (if it is against the AUP), spam, etc..
You have a point there Stelios. I wouldn't want my provider to access my account either but as for seeing client's info, the most they can see if their domains and contents of their domain. Depends on how you store your client's data, they may not gain access to that at all, unless of course you store your client's data on an excel spreadsheet and living in your hosting account and title it my-clients-data.xls.

That made me smile for a while…but then I think again, I will never do this, but what about if a client of my company do this in his account which bought from me…and a day comes to prove that my provider isn’t honest enough and get this file, get all the information is in this file and send emails to my client customers about products. Or just sell there information and emails (maybe my client has an online shop and has very sensitive information in this file)
The client know my company…my company is the one which will get sue. Is this right? What a reseller can do in this situation…I know this not happen very often but it could happen.
I have personally not come across this myself, at least not to my knowledge. However if you are worried about this happening to you, then I would suggest you get a reseller account from a decent/well known hosting company.
If you are currently hosting this account and is worried, then you might want to move this account or all of your account to a better host.
Or maybe change your TOS etc to make sure that you are not liable in case there is a "theft" of information though that will probably not help much.
What a reseller can do in a situation like this? a good question which I'm not sure of the answer myself.
Best is to wait for someone more experience in the hosting industry to answer your post.
As was mentioned before, the owner of the server has both the right and the obligation to know what their server is being used for. If this includes the occasional check on what files a reseller's customer is storing it comes with the territory of renting server space.
Don't like it? You will need your own server.

If you are hosting on MY server, I have a right to know everything you are doing on it. If I suspect you're doing something nasty, I can and will peek into your account to find out exactly what's going on.
There's nothing wrong with that and any server admin that totally ignores what his/her customers are doing is not doing his/her job.
