    Detect VPS software

I have a customer that thinks he is on a vps account but was sold a dedicated server. Is there an unequivocal way to detected that it is or is not a vps? I have run unixbench and it is a very fast server.

    Thanks!

How many partitions do you have in cpanel one big / ? how many gigs of storage do you have?

dmesg usually tells you everything you need to know.

In shell type dmesg it should come up with alot of info.

  3. Im waiting for Rus to post. He has a good way to determine if a server is a VPS or not.

typing "df" in shell will show if it is a vzfs filesystem

more /proc/cpuinfo will tell quite a bit about your processors

    and most importantly

    lspci -v

feel free to post the output of these commands, we will tell you if you have VPS or not

OK I'm sure I posted this before but this is a way to tell

ls -l /proc/xen - Will show if you are on xen
grep -i user /proc/cpuinfo - Will show if you are on usermode linux
ls -l /proc/user_beancounters or /dev/vzfs will show if you are on Virtuozzo
lspci | grep -i vmware - Will show if you are on VMWare
df | grep vn on FreeBSD should show if you are in a jail. However things like ping won't work which is more of a give away

I've yet to see a VPS solution that is 100% transparent

Ill post what i got from doing this, I asked Wade to look into it for me as I couldnt tell.

I did all the commands above, the ones Rus posted, none of them worked.

    commands;
    df
    dmesg
    more /proc/cpuinfo
    lspci -v

Worked and I uploaded the screenshots to an friends server, since i dont have 5 posts, I cant post the link. So if you can be bothered, you'll have to put together the link below.

    tg007
domain has a info extension, and the files are under the image folder, inside a folder called vps

Hopefully someone can help me out here. From what i originally could see, it was a dedicated server, but a Dual Xeon 3.0ghz for only 40 US a month.. seems abit crazy.

LOL... price too low? Is the company named AngelNetworkz?

  14. #14
    No its not named "AngelNetworkz".

And I personally dont know anywhere else where you can rent a Dual Xeon 3.0ghz, 2gb Ram, 250gb Sata Drives, cpanel and fantastico included, for just 40 US :| plus 20 setup fee for first month.

Thus why I wondered whether it was a VPS.

Well its a dedicated server hosted at GNAX and thir pricing is nowhere near that level. Something is very fishy

We'll see him crying soon on the main forum about "my provider went under, and all my 2.95 customers are leaving me"

Well here is an intresting twist I just had someone offer me a Dual Xeon, RAID-10 with the same specs on the same IP for $80 setup and $35/mo with C-Panel. Taking C-Panel is at least $15/mo and that hardware is $2.5k at least. I've dropped a PM to sailor to see if there is anything special about this

  20. If its really a GNAX server, I tell you RUN!!!
You can hardly get a Celeron 2.0 for that price let alone Dual Xeon, realistically speaking.

This is very interesting, the only way that I can see it being possible is if the hardware had been aquired from a "dodgy source" ... Of course I'm not suggesting this of GNAX as I know they are a very genuine company, it's probably someone colocating machines in their DC.

I'm sure Sailor will have them like a shot anyway ...
