Microsoft.com hacked?
Dear all,
I am sitting here tonight with my laptop and surfing the web. Everything everywhere is fine, except microsoft.com. when I put it into my browser I end up with the default apache web server page you get when you have apache running and nothing else.
a load of other microsoft pages which I find from google are also showing as broken.
Anyone know if someone has pulled off an amazing hack or is something else going on?FishFood Media :: fastfood for a hungry church

You probably have spyware. I very much doubt Microsoft uses Apache.

Just so you are all certain on this point - I have absolutely no doubt that MS do not use Apache. I'm not that daft. But I was just surprised to find that the microsoft domain had disappeared and thought it might be a massively impressive hack. I hadn't thought it couldbe spyware. I will look into that. Thanks.

I was going to suggest what Prohacker showed. I'd bet that your hosts file is screwy, and you're resolving that domain to other things. Maybe someone played a trick on you?

It could also be that you are using dns servers in your network connections that have a bogus record for these domains. For example, if you have a dedicated server and have the nameserver IP's for this server in your network settings dns area then someone creates an account on that server with the domain microsoft.com, your system will think that is the real microsoft.com because it is using that server for dns lookups.
Open up ms-dos and type 'nslookup' to see what dns server you use.Chief brew-maker at several hosting brands since 2002.

HI guys,
just coming back to you all after nipping off to bed last night. I can confirm that it is a simple case of spyware or malware, whatever you want to call this one.
Just feeling silly now to have thought they'd managed to hack bill gate's little server.
Thanks for the help.FishFood Media :: fastfood for a hungry church

Its not possibled to hack a company that large. They have massive rollover servers. One goes down, the other one kicks in and takes its place almost instantly...

I think it was someone at norton that said nothing is hacker proof, just hacker resistant.
The only true way to stop hackers is to unplug your network cable, wouldnt make a good server, but there again, they could still break into the DC and get at it.Note to self: Add something funny!

Even if they were hacked, it would have been detected immediately and their domain would have rollovered to another server to prevent any downtime.

imo, Adware and Spybot are out.
The only downside is it will expire soon and no longer freeware as it's in beta right now.
