Web Hosting DOWNFALL
From recent news, and some sources that I have, I rregret to inform you that 'Google' is looking into and developing free, non-bannered or add'd, webhosting. The catch is that you can only upload files less than 60 MB, or you can pay a very small fee.
Sooner or later, I hear that they will offer free dedicated servers. This sounds outrageous, I know, but think about it. Google really 'owns' the web. It is the most popular site, and if it were to die, the world would be in panic
We all know Google has the resources to do this, but will they is the question. I am affriad to tell you 'yes', they probablly will (from my sources).
Let's hope for the best.0

Judging from the poor uptime of GMail I doubt their hosting will be any good. There will always be room for our web hosting market, IMHO.

I can see it now...Instant PR 5 with every signup.
They don't have the resources to handle that. They will have no service. There will be no one to email or call if there is an issue. Google is getting too big for themselves.
Sure people will sign up but they can't maintain a hosting company for long.
Hey...let them try maybe this will be there fown fall.0

They're going to give out dedicated servers? That will never happen.
Think about it. They would have to A) Buy a ton of land, B) Build a datacenter big enough to house several million servers. C) Hire a ton of people to monitor the network, build servers, and do a whole bunch of other stuff.
Hell, think about the bandwidth that would be required. Forget GigE connections, they would need YetaE connections going through that place.
It would be incredibly stupid for google to attempt something like that, when they have very little to gain from it.
Free Shared hosting, maybe. Free Dedicated servers, never.0

I don't know what "poor uptime" of Gmail you're talking about. I've been using it since the beginning & NEVER had one problem.

I could believe they might get into free shared hosting and maybe even cheap paid hosting (though I'm not convinced), but I wouldn't believe the dedicated servers thing - there is no way that would be beneficial to their company and it would take away from their other key revenue-generating areas.
Some other large companies have attempted to get into the hosting market and failed (realizing that supporting it was actually work and thus selling the assets off), I think Google might be more saavy and might avoid going down that road. They have too many other promising avenues to persue right now.
I think what you can expect next from Google is a new web browser release.0

Every time one of these big companies decides to get into the hosting business someone will jump up and predict doom for the hosting industry.
Let them offer their hosting. Who cares. People will still look for local hosting and customer service.0

I dont really like google very much, for example, i had "Google ads" on my website and I racked up a fairly large amount. ($400). I was very excited about this the only catch was they took ages just to send me my pin number (Few Months). I'm just saying this to show that unless they improve their service, their hosting will not be very successful.

i cannot imagine google would offer free webhosting with no ads, based on everything else they do I would expect there to be some advertising to the visitors somewhere. they might be google and have lots of resources, but they still need to have some gain from things they do one way or another.
besides if they wipe out the hosting market, they would lose all that overhead free adwords profit from webhosting keywords!
yahoo offers hosting, not the cheapest but its still "yahoo" and this had little affect on us, we get transfer customers from yahoo every now and then.Kevin0

Ah that would kind of stuck if that did happen, but like VolkNet said it would get rid of a lot of hosting websites that shouldn't be on the web.

I believe Google will offer free web hosting, maybe with a specialised ads that adds more content to the free web sites and integrate better with them. But dedicated servers wise, I don't think so. At least not without some kind of preconditions, maybe site have to have a certain number of hits per month.

Google is huge and all, but I don't think it would have quite the impact some of you are thinking, such as "removing kiddie hosts". There are already huge players in the market, some coming in recently, its a huge market.
as for th person saying this thread is B.S, i think i heard some talk a while back about google registering with icann, I would suspect they have some plans to use lots of domains?
maybe they will just offer "yourname.com" for gmail, or maybe they will do hosting, who knows.
but like i said whatever google does you can multiply it by three (yahoo and msn)Kevin0

Free shared hosting? It won't matter much, it will just be another Geocities.
Free dedicated servers? Haha, yeah right, not even Google could do that.0

More power to them. The people who use free hosting are usually the ones who would not pay for real service. At least this was we'll have a reliable place to direct cheap customers to.
