Re: Googling her very rude tenant - leads to Murder Arrest of Sex Offender
I had a big rant that would have probably started a nice flame war, but I've decided to just make it short.
How in the world, logically, is 'kidnapping' a 'sex crime' and why would you repeat such a horrible association of the two? Granted, he's a bad man, you shouldn't murder, but equating a 'kidnapper' (i have my doubts on this definition as well, but we'll not go there) with a sex offender is just silly. You put them in the same group as child mollesters, which while kidnapping is bad, really doesn't deserve THAT rap.

I missed it too ... but I think it's partially because of the following statement in the first article and I didn't read the second:
Quote:
From article linked in first post
As for the question of why Loftis is listed on the sex offender registry, in South Carolina kidnapping is considered a sex offense.

WebOnce, I agree with your *first post* and no you didn't miss it the first time. Trifolic incorrectly explained why.

That is why he is wanted *now* for questioning but not why he is a convicted sex offender. He has not been convicted of that crime (yet), (Quote: "...and a person of interest in the murder of Diana Willmeth, the Gaston woman whose body was found on July 7..."
The article states...
Quote:
It was the spring of 2004 when, according to arrest warrants, a Gaston woman came home from a night out to find a man sitting in her living room rocking chair with a shotgun. Reports show Loftis held the victim against her will for hours and then eventually just got up and left.
Deputies arrested Loftis later that night and charged him with kidnapping and first degree burglary.
<snip>
As for the question of why Loftis is listed on the sex offender registry, in South Carolina kidnapping is considered a sex offense.

I don't understand how kidnapping is considered a sex offense either. Makes absolutely no sense to me. In some cases I could see how it could be, but if it is automatic, then that's ridiculous.

That would be my transgression as well.

Ok, I feel a little better now. Of course... if you get caught ... relieving yourself ... outside ... say on a dumpster or on a tree, in Michigan, you can get that classification as well.
While I can agree with such listing/classifing for some folks... others just seem silly.

Maybe there was more to it than this...
"Reports show Loftis held the victim against her will for hours and then eventually just got up and left."
Who knows what he did during those hours, but if it wasn't anything sexual, then I don't get it. You could hold me against my will for hours (maybe demanding ransom, etc.) and I don't think I'd call that sexual. I mean, it is kidnapping (which generally involves holding someone against their will for a period of time). At least not enough to earn you the lable of "convicted sex offender." Sure you're a psycho kidnapper, but not a sex offender IMHO.

I really wouldn't even consider it kidnapping as it's in home... granted 'unlawful detention'... by dictionary, sure... but by general usage kidnapping infers that you were taken somewhere... she was held hostage, not kidnapped... but that's just being technical.
Granted, it was a good move finding out about the guy on google, well done on that.

Heh true. Usually when you think of kidnapping, it is somewhere else...
You: "I was kidnapped!"
The law: "Where? What happened!"
You: "In my house! Nothing!"
The law: "Errrrr...."
It's almost like robbing a bank, but instead of fleeing, you just hold the bag for a few minutes, then hand it back, and walk out.
Not kidnapping, not sex crime. I'm wondering how they do things down in South Carolina? Sounds scary. If you shoplift, you might end up on death row for murder.
