Who is the best DNS provider??

Looked at ultradns.com any others they are very very good?

Some thing that can do like this..

I'd also be interested in hearing about experiences with using UltraDNS or other DNS services. UltraDNS seems to have a good line of products at reasonable cost, but since I'm not really familiar with networking issues I can't be sure of their utility.

Also, can anyone give a better idea of how the pricing works out. UltraDNS charges based on several metrics--the main one seems to be number of queries in a month. I know that lookups proceed up the hierachy until they find a server with the info and whether or not a server has the info cached is based upon time to live parameter. What's this mean in practice, though?

Is there some time type of rule of thumb that can be employed. For example, could I guestimate XX% of HTTP requests on my domain name will results in a query to UltraDNS' servers? Obviously this will vary based on unique visiors within the time to live amount, but I don't even know where to start.

I know of ultradns.com, zoneedit.com and easydns.com..

UltraDNS looks to be the only one with a Web Based system, servers around the world..

What we want or need is very High End DNS with servers every where and can ping the server so if one goes down it points HHTP or whate ever traffic to the off site server.. Any ideas??

Yea i see there just not sure how BIG they are..

Not sure if they are up there with zone edit.. We are thinking about making our own and placing about 10 servers around the internet and doing it our self..

But its all the background work and program that all ways gets me..

Not sure how to set it all up to work with a Interface for users..

This is the main part about Ultra we liked and why.. Not only if it fails but also what server is close to the end user..

From UltraDNS's site..
"With Directional DNS, you have discretion over your load balancing because you can specify regional servers and reroute traffic on the fly"

I want this with a failover option more less from a DNS provider..

If you really want high end, why mess with DNS at all? You could just get an edge-serving system like Akamai or Speedera and let them serve everything. Of course this only works with static content, but failover DNS isn't going to update a db anyway.

Speedera also offers an explicit failover service where if your server goes down they'll serve static content off their servers. It is very pricey though.

i used to use easydns.com before i signed up at host nexus and found them to be very good, although a little pricey for the full DNS-plus package

Sounds a tad expensive, if you're not going to sell the DNS service to others, but only going to use it for your own sites?

Also, 10 servers sounds like a bit of overkill. How many places can you set up redudant servers with the same web content as the primary server? - And how likely is it for 9 DNS servers to be unavailable at the same time? - even 3 or 4 DNS servers?

Buy the software and have it installed on your servers :-)

DNS is so much _fun_ :-) - I'm actually just programming my own DNS server at the moment (yep, another one).

What and why we i was thinking so many servers..

1) I want a 100% uptime on the DNS network.
2) Geographic Zones for the DNS servers.
3) I would like to sell it if i can make the system Web Bases..

4) Geographic zones support for Web Servers. So the DNS server would know what Server is closeest and fastest to that user.

5) Load balancing with server when there is no problems.
6) Checking to make sure all servers are up every 30sec. if one goes down it does not route any traffic there till its backup.

I may be able to do this on 4 servers but we are wanting to be all the big backbones.. If we do it we plan on buying space in each colo to offer backup web servers as a package to this like a full setup.. But want it all web based and automated..

Almost like taking ultradns and web hosting and putting them together so they could have High end very high up time at a great price..

Well, your not the first with this kind of idea :-) Try looking around, and you'll see that there are a few providers of this kind of service already. It seems to me like a trying to take on a too-large project, if you want to dive into something like this without having any software ready or any DNS experience in advance.

Believe me, there are many places where errors can sneak into such a system. I have built more than one of these dns web control panels, and it's not something you do overnight :-)

Yea i know.. Thats why i am trying to find a very good one all ready done..

I did talk with ultraDNS today..

For what we wanted just doing DNS stuff not kind of hosting. was close to $900 a month.. I told for that i will edit the DNS my darn self when needed.. LOL

We have the servers all ready placed for the web sites and have done the same for DNS as well.. But the CP part is what stops us cold..

Maybe one day... hehe
