    Whats the advantage of co-hosting?

I have a site to be hosted in the uk serving the US & the UK
Would I give better service to the US if I had a mirror or cohosted site?

Does this, in effect, mean 2 sites ?
If not how do the sites work together?

Could you first explain what co-hosting is?

I think what you're talking about is geographic load-balancing. You would maintain two servers, each with a copy of the website. When someone makes a request, it would go to the closest server, using fancy DNS tricks.

You could just put something on the northern east coast, so that its the closest possible to the UK.

Is there a way of knowing the server location of a hosting company?
i.e. How would I know it was hosted in the north East
(which I agree is mid way between the Pacific west coast and UK)

Usually hosting companies will tell you where they are located.

If you're in the UK, play with pinging various hosts - that should give you an idea of response times ... something around 80-100ms from the UK is great.
