I haven't used Ventrillo lately, but last time I did, we were running the server on a 350 MHz machine with 128 MB RAM, that was also serving up a fairly busy, database-intensive site: the machine was the slowest thing I've ever used. (We finally just accepted 5 seconds for a page to render as good enough.) I don't believe Ventrillo made a dent in the system. (I don't know specifics about CPU/RAM usage, just that I had no problem letting it run on a machine that was already pretty heavily loaded.)
Why exactly are you looking at getting a dedicated server? Have you looked into getting a VPS?
Depending on that number how much bandwith will i need, do i need alot almost an unlimited amout?
Almost unlimited? Use caution with any place claiming to be "unlimited" -- besides the fact that bandwidth isn't infinite in the first place, there's the problem that unlimited places tend to be overloaded.
Originally posted by VapoRub You can host alot of Vent/TS servers on a P4 w/ 1-2 GB RAM. I think one of our customers told me that he hosted 500+ slots; however, I would take a server and do a trial and error run.
Thats about right. But then again 500 slots could be only 20 or so servers. Or 2 200 man servers and a 100 man server (You get the point)
A P4 is a good starting point as Vent and TS don't use alot of CPU time. You will use up some ram and a fair amount of bandwidth though.
Vent lisence will be extremly hard to get. First of all you need to have a buisness lisence, a nice site (not really but no one will buy from crappy sites!) and you need to be able to purchase a minimum of 1,000 ventrilo slots, which isnt that much because, Im guessing I forgot how much, but I think they charge 10 cents a slot.
