    ZenCart plus Credit Cards

I'm sure this has been asked in various forms before, but I couldn't find any clear/straight answers on the forums.

I've used ZenCart and made an e-commerce site with complete customization - I'm good at that stuff . Now I'm trying to figure out the whole on-line payment thing. Basically I want people to be able to pay with a credit card without leaving my site. I expect my traffic to be moderate to low and my volume to be the same (say ~$1000/month max, unless things get crazy).

    1. What do I need in order to accept credit cards? I keep reading things about gateways, merchants, etc., but can't keep them straight.

    2. Do I need a SSL certificate on my server to allow me to accept credit cards?

These are the two fundamental, albeit rather loaded, questions at the moment. I'm sure more questions will pop to mind as I'm schooled in what I need.

    Thanks a lot in advance!!

    John

You need SSL to provide secure payments, it's no 1
You need to get merchant account and a payment gateway to accept credit cards it's no 2

Thanks to a good start to my schooling (tuition is cheap!). I'm in Michigan and I sell signs (store signs, vinyl banners, etc.). So one option is to get a merchant account and a payment gateway. What do each of those do? Also, what are the 3pp that provide payments with no direction? What are these 3pp called officially and what do they do? Thanks again!!

    Ok, lets go

As I said if you expect to process over 1000$ it's better to go with merchant acc, if your expected volume is under 1000$-3pp.
3pp is a third party processor, these are companies like ccbill, 2co, PayPal and others. They use their merchant account for your processing. SO actually your money are kept at their account untill you have a payout ( different processors offer different terms, some offer weekly payouts, some mothly, some instant, it depends..). The difference between 3pp and your personal merchant acc is generally in that, that with MA you have all money on your account, with 3pp they have your money.
Payment gateway is a connection through wich the payment is processed, it should be secure so you will need to setup a SSL cert. too. It's much more simple to go with 3pp if you are a starter as they do your job. But if you are planning to establish a big'n serious business you may start with MA.
    Any more questions?

So I can either get a 3pp or a MA + payment gateway? Why would I want to go with a 3pp instead of getting a MA+PG? Are the fees less if I go with a 3pp?

Is a MA an exclusively on-line entity? By this I mean that I already own my own business in the physical world where I accept credit cards, but my bank has never referred to itself as providing me with a merchant account.

3pp rates may be better if you process under 1000$ anyway it depends. Sometimes your business doesn't allow you to go with MA, for example porn and some pharma related suff.
This question should not be adressed to me, but as it seems to me, merchant acc is used for accepting credit cards, and you can process offline using it. As some companies don't use virtual terminals and send privent info using FAX, etc.
