I am new to this (sorry for repeating the question that is proabbly been asked millions of times before) and they left me in charge to find a server and software for some of their projects for the web studio. The demand of the servers are not going to be high we are going to limit the boxes to a certain amount of clients about 50% of what they can handle.
My question is what would you recommend for a web studio company to use to host some of their design clients (not high demand)? I was looking at a marketing side and may go with a Pentium D at 2.8GHz (64-bit Computing at Dual Core - Latest Technology); is this worth it or is there something just around the river bend? I am also looking at modernBill, Kayako eSupport or SupportSuite and Plesk; are these a good choices, is there anything bad or good about them?
Is there anything else should I consider doing before or during setting this division up for the web studio? All the input is very helpfull so please share and thanks for your time and suggestions in advance.
You can choose different datacenters for this servers but you need to consider couple of things before you choose any of the datacenters. Test the quality of support and response time of support team of those datacenters by just sending simple ticket to support@**** and verify if they offer 24x7 phone support or not.
No one would like to directly refer you to good datacenter and those who do may have intentions of advertising for those datacenters. Try and contact some good consultants and get advice from them or go through old threads in this forum.
I am looking at getting a linux based dedicated server and thanks for the tip on testing support I will be sure to do that as well! How is the software and dedicated server the web studio wants in the real world test?
I am also looking for monthly transfer suggestions; I have seen 5mpbs to 10mpbs unmettered are these really good enough? I have also seen 100mpbs uplink with like 1200GB monthly transfer; how do they compare? These are not to be high demand sites on this server and maybe only 75 clients max per server; I want to insure great quality server and service on the budget I have to deal with all of these things I have mentioned are all within my budget.
The budget for the server is within $500 a month and software budget is all covered since it is a once time cost with little renewal. There is not going to be streaming media most of the sites will be some flash, allot of html/images and very few media.
Next; then the 5-10mbps would be a very safe bet to get or start with and have no problems? I was considering The Planet/ServerMatrix but from what I read on this forum their business methods can be shady; is there any other recommendations? What is the advantage and disadvantage of a 64-bit system in such a case like mine?
I thank you all for your help all of this information is very useful for me when I am searching for a server, software and provider so thank you very much and please continue to share your suggestions for it does not fall on deaf ears.
But what should I look for in a fully managed server that makes one better then the other? Next I have been asked about backup solutions; I have looked at adding a second HDD just for backup to NAS to Offsite Systems like RAIDArray.net, is there an advantage to each one, which one should I select for best qualtiy, reliable and secureness?
well for 1 by getting a fully Mangaed Dedicated box you dont have to worry about spending so much time and money trying to configure it, install programs, security issues, trooble shootings and all other stuffs, this allows you to just plain simple relax and not worry much. In the other hand with unmanaged dedicated box you do have to configure it your self, install softwares yourself, etc. Also its good to have backup drive also, gigs I cant tell you that that's something that you will have to figure out, I dont know what type of business and how much data you will have or use. and I dont know much about those companies.
Okay lets get back to my orginal question; how are the Pentium D Servers (64-bit Computing)? Is it worth spending the money on getting into a 64-bit system? Or should I say would you purchase this if you could; please explain your answer?

Read through the documentation verrrry carefully, as most "fully managed servers" aren't. In fact, MOST (note: not all) providers that provide "fully managed" services don't even check logs, the most crucial part in letting your server talk to you
Personally, I'd suggest fastservers, as they've been extremely good to me the past 3 years or so. Their prices are a bit up there (certainly not low priced), but their network AND their support is 1000% worth it.

What I plan to do with a server is to host websites; I can not predict what these sites are for they do not exist but what every they are they will be designed for the server. I have to assume the entire range of high demand and low demand; but the question was what do you think of the Pentium D (64-bit Computing) server and would you get it if you could? The Pentium D is 64 Bit using Dual Core Technology which seems to be the latest out there.
If all your doing is hosting about 75 websites per server a pentium3 with 512MB ram would do this easily. In the general web serving community cutting edge equipment isn't needed and generally not a very good idea what you want is good stability with reasonable performance. In other words you could get away with a celeron 1.6GHz 512MB ram on 10mbit connection running a *nix os and have all the power you need plus some. why spend money on something you wont use. Also i believe
allmanaged [dot] com will prolly provide exactly what you need.
I went with Pentiun D 2.8GHz Plesk Server to use I will let you know how it turns out as soon as I have time to test it after which I will post on this forum my findings since there is not allot of reviews on the Pentiun D Servers.
