Trams are easy, and good fun. Have a go on the City Circle tram, as it's free and does a loop of the city, with a guide to advise on the different things around the city of note. Probably a good place to start.
Take a trip up to the Rialto observation deck (cost is about $14.00 for adults) for a great view of Melbourne and surrounds.
While you're up there take a look to the west of the city and look for the Telstra Dome. You can then go there tonight to experience some exciting Aussie Rules football (tonight is Kangaroos vs West Coast Eagles, should be a good match).
You could catch a tram up to Carlton to experience Lygon Street (Italian food), walk to China town, catch a tram to Chappel Street, South Yarra for some great shopping.
The Melbourne City Circle Tram travels a rectangular route along Flinders, Spring, LaTrobe and Spencer Sts right around the Melbourne city centre.
If you're staying in a hotel ask them for a map and some other suggestions. Whatever you do, enjoy. Melbourne is a nice, safe, place. Let me know what you end up doing and what you thought of it all, I'd like to hear about it.
Start off in Young & Jacksons (Opposite flinders St. Station) then walk down the road to Hosies (nudie girls! just past Elizabeth St.), then go back to Elizabeth St. to The Junction (upstairs) if still sober you haven't been trying hard enough!
[If you like longs walks & seafood & buying little stuff]
On Swanston St. take the Port Melbourne tram to Port Melbourne, there's a nice fish & chips shop near the station. It's called 'Rex Hunt's'. After that, if you do this on a Sunday, walk along the beach to St.Kilda and there's a day market on the Esplanade.
Lot's of knick knacks and stuff. There's another market (if you like that kinda stuff) at Southgate, also on Sunday.

Sorry about the delay in replying to this thread. I am sure anyone who has done some travelling knows it can be hard to get a computer with net connection while on the move...
Anyways, just to give you guys a rough idea, I am a student from Malaysia studying at Uni of Tasmania. And since I have to transit Melbourne anyways, decided to visit my friends for a while and all, before going back to Tassie.
I didn't make it to the match cause friends were planning dinner and invited a few people over and it didn't seem nice that I dump them all to watch football. Specially since I am staying at their place. Went to Crown and night one also.
Day two was cold and rainy, with no sun. I went up the Rialto towers like webarama suggested. It was nice view and all.
Went to the Zoo later too. Like I said, it was cold and rainy, but hell, we made it anyways. Did finally see a kangaroo and a koala.
After dinner went to watch a strip show Wanna see what's it like, since in both Tassie and Malaysia, you can't get it. But felt strange, watching these kinda stuff with 2 girls...
Anyways. That was my little Melbourne adventure. Melbourne sure is nice and fun. Didn't feel like coming back to Tassie after that Gotta go over there another time.

Next time you're coming to Melbourne PM me and I'll give you some more suggestions of things to do. I didn't have a lot of time the other day to put too much information or detail, but if you give me a few days notice I can suggest plenty of other things to check out.
Sorry the weather wasn't too good over the weekend, but sounds like you had an enjoyable time all the same.
