mysql backup: mysqldump or copy datadir?

What's the best solution for backing up the mysqml databases om my server? Mysqldump or just copy the mysql data directory?

    There are three variants:
    1. Replication feature (the best solution but it requires second server) http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/replication.html
    2. mysqldump. But if databases are so large, you need to do dump separately for dbs or tables.
    3. stop mysql server; copy datadir; start mysql server
