That can be compared to a 2.8.

In our experience, the xeons have just been better :/

Especially for webhosting - the way the cpu is designed i'd say xeons are better for DB and opterons better for static pages

Matt, I'm not sure where you got those stats from. We run many Dual Xeons (many more than Dual Opterons), and out Dual Opterons consistantly outperform the Dual Xeons mainly in DB and WEB SERVING.

Either way, both Xeons and Opterons peform quite well, but we find Opterons perform a fair bit better than the Xeons.

I would disagree. The Opterons statistically always perform better in a database scenario, especially when run in 64bit mode. This holds true in most serving environments as well.

The Xeons generally perform better than the Opterons in a desktop environment however.

Given the choice, I'd always take the Opteron chip.

I apologize if it seemed like that - that was certainly not my intention.

I was just stating my experiences, as well as my knowledge of the architectures.

Again though, I do apologize if you felt that I was attacking you in anyway!

To each his own is my motto.

    Cheers,

I think the reason is because we run it in 32 bit Bad idea i guess - we'll try the 64 bit and no need to apologize. I guess I misunderstood sam ! Cheers

    Hello,

I found opterons much faster then xeons. I have both - but this days - I am not geting any XEONS any more. I just go opterons.

Even with 32 bit mode opterons are faster with database - and any other thing out there now.

With 64 bit mode - u can get extra power with ZERO cost.

We mostly run BSD on opterons - solo or with CPANEL - or some other combinations in load balance solution.

Anyway, if u get off on intel - buy xeon - but if u wana go faster go with opterons

Thanks guy for such as useful infomation.

Is this dual opteron 242 ?

    Processor #1 Vendor: AuthenticAMD
    Processor #1 Name: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 242
    Processor #1 speed: 1595.068 MHz
Processor #1 cache size: 1024 KB

    Processor #2 Vendor: AuthenticAMD
    Processor #2 Name: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 242
    Processor #2 speed: 1595.068 MHz
Processor #2 cache size: 1024 KB

I check these in cpanel, i think it is single opteron 242 right ? The dual opteron has to have 4 cpu instead of 2 cpu ,right ?

No, that is a dual opteron output, Proc#1 and Proc#2.

The Xeon's with HT support will show 4 CPU's, 2 physical and 2 'logical'.

AMD doesn't do HT, they do dual-core....which Intel will have out on the Xeon side soon, and I think with yet another spin of the chipset, not sure if they are going to be pin compat. like the Opterons were.
