I've registered a domain name with 1and1.co.uk, I want to setup the domain as a private name server, but when I spoke to 1and1 about it, they made me feel like I was thick or something.
Anyway, they've told me the only way I can do it is to upgrade my account to a hosting account and then setup 2 subdomains for the name servers. I find this silly because I already have hosting elsewhere and dont want to pay them for hosting I'm not going to use. Seems very strange.
Is there anyway to setup private name servers with 1and1, or am I just going to have to wait 60 days and then transfer my domain to another company?
If they do not allow nameserver registrations, then I believe you will have to wait and transfer the domain. There is not much you can do, unless the domain registrar can register nameservers you cannot set them up.
Yes, you need to create two subdomains (ns1 & ns2.yourdomain.com)from the 1and1 cp and assign the ips to them. I have tried that before and worked

Raptor, I will say that sounds like an excellent idea. But I have been unable to assign IP numbers to my subdomains. Will only take valid URLs...
What I find amusing is in my attempt to transfer away from 1and1 is that they sure didn't waste any time transferring to them..
I had my domain registered at GoDaddy. Could pretty much do whatever to the DNS I wanted, but decided to play the "all the eggs in one basket for simplicity sake" card and transfer my domain to 1and1.com since that is where I was hosting at the time.
I have since changed hosts and now that I want to point the DNS to my own name servers, 1and1 won't allow me to do so. So I am attempting to transfer the domain back to GoDaddy...
What I find amusing (like I had said) when I originally transferred to 1and1 it took...mebbe 2-3 days for the entire process. GoDaddy was quick to respond to the emails to transfer (even when I forgot to unlock) and everything was quick and easy...
Now that I am attempting to transfer, I unlock my account..and wait... re-initiate the transfer to godaddy and wait some more..
Call 1and1 and am told that it could take 7 - 10 days? ... never in a million years would that be acceptable from any ISP that I came from (used to admin)....
So go fig. I am stuck with a domain at 1and1 until they decide to release it to godaddy. Until then I don't want to update the website since my plan at 1and1 doesn't hold a candle to what I'm spinning up at my new hosts...
synopsis. - Avoid domain registration and hosting at 1and1 at all costs.
FWIW, I steer clear of any host that seems anxious for you to transfer your domain to them when all you need to do is update the name servers.
When you sign up at 1+1 their form assumes that if you have already registered your domain elsewhere then you will be transfering it to them. There probably is a way sign up a pre-registered domain without transfering but they don't seem very anxious to make it easy for you to do so. Doesn't inspire trust.
I dont want to turn the thread into bashing 1and1 but there is VERY little that is appealing about 1and1 except for some of there pricing ( on dedicated servers )... The old saying is true though.. You definately get what you pay for!
Cheap doesn't mean good! It means just that... CHEAP!!!!
There registrar service makes it impossible to get anything done ( name servers, MX records, ect. ) and there support is one of the worst in the business! 1and1's answer to solving a problem is re-image the box!
All of this I learned from experience! Hopefully it will serve as a lesson to others also considering using 1and1's service.
