gonna FORMAT my hdd, need advice

My home computer is due for a format and a clean install of windows AGAIN (its been 1.5 years since the last time i did it. btw, this computer is 2.5 yrs old already)

HOWEVER.......this time, i dont want to spend days configuring my computer and reinstalling my needed applications.

i wanna keep all my browser bookmarks (most in firefox), passwords saved by the browser, and most importantly my applications

is there some software that can backup software (files, registry keys etc) by analysing the required parts of the program from the "uninstall file", or is there some easy way of backing up my appz and reinstalling them automatically

btw, i dont need to worry about where to backup my files, i have an external hdd, which is about 3 times the size of dis computer's hdd

OMGOMG, i am already feeling nervous from thinking about all the work i might need to do if i need to reconfigure my computer manually

In the past i installed some programs to make what you want...none of them worked to make this.
If you have the programs setup, format HDD ....

just use windows backup to external drive and after formating and installing recover everything from that backup.
last week, I did same without any problem.
