    I missed Infoseek, Excite, Webcrawler....

I really missed Infoseek, Excite, Webcrawler and Altavista etc when they are independent entities. When there were no charges for submission of web sites. I enjoyed those times when you compete against each other to get a higher ranking during their searches, each search engines according to their own characteristics.

Nowadays most if not all are paid search engines and quite a number are already merged as one......

I very rarely use anything but google for search....which is still free to submit.

Its also free to add your site to dmoz, which a lot of search engines use.

Yeah, back in 96, 97, 98 etc. Excite, Webcrawler and Altavista were "kings". I only use those three back in those days for all of my search.

But now, who cares about them. They were/are too greedy IMO. I only use Google as they are the best.

I use google all the time but recently I started using yahoo and msn. (same results appear in different order).

  7. I used excite back in those days and none of those engines you mentioned are as accurate as google anyway.

Its the survival of the fittest, if you are crap then you will be guaranteed extinction. Same goes to hosting companies.
Its harsh but its for the better.

And I dont like the way you can get on top of those engines by modifying the META tags. Porn companies came up in the results no matter what you typed.
Type in "pizza", porn comes up.
Type in "bob marley", porn comes up.
Type in "pamela anderson", even MORE porn comes up.
What were they thinking back then??!!!
