    Shared host allowing self-run DNS?

I would like to do my own DNS while still using the subdomain features of a shared host. I tried 1and1 for a while, but they constantly nag me about domain transfer being "incomplete" and eventually delete my subdomains because I'm not using their nameservers.

So, for example, I would like to be able to set subdomain.domain.com to point to a subdirectory using the host's control panel, and just make that change myself in my own DNS.

Which hosts have no problem doing this and also (most importantly) are on the Netcraft most reliable list, 2GB storage, PHP, MySQL. A dedicated IP would be nice, but isn't necessary.

My budget is under $20 a month and no setup fee or under $15 and a modest setup fee.

    Thanks.

I think your best solution (probably the cheapest too) would be finding a host offering cPanel and Web Host Manager. Most hosts offering WHM (for resellers) allow their resellers to directly edit the DNS.

There are many hosts on Web Hosting Talk that have reseller plans for under $20 with no setup fee.

Netcraft does list some good hosting providers. But... The data netcraft provides can not really give you an indication of how good a host will be. A low connect time is a good thing, but you also will want to do your homework and make sure the customer support is good as well. Also, that list leaves out many good hosting providers because it costs over $2100.00 US per year to be listed there.

    Hope I was helpfull!

I'm not sure if you mean a different list, but we've never been asked for so much as a dime to appear there.

    Greetings:

If you were with a H-Sphere provider -- http://www.psoft.net/resellers.php -- their control panel would allow you to update your DNS (you would have to be on their DNS, though).

    Thank you.

I was referring to this page: http://uptime.netcraft.com/perf/reports/Hosters

    Where it says:
If you represent a hosting company and would like to be included in the table, we charge 1200 GBP per annum for inclusion. Please mail us at [email protected] if you would like to be included.

Perhaps this is a different list than the one the original poster was referring to?

The OP is asking for hosts who would allow him to host his OWN dns separately from that of his webspace. Not having to have his nameservers pointed as the webhost's.

    Lucent,

In many cases I would think several hosts around would permit this, quite frankly can't see why it would not be permitted if you explain what you wish to be able to do/why you need it that way.

It looks like the same type of information, and we're listed in both instances, but we were not charged. I don't believe it's a pay-for-promo type of thing. It seems odd, if they are "listing the top 50", that they would solicit additional entrants.
