Trillian is your best bet for Windows. Version 3 has improved a lot, especially the free one.

There are a lot of Jabber-oriented applications which work well. http://pandion.be is a nice one.

I'll second the Trillian suggestion, I've purchased the full version. It shows people's away messages under their names, along with other handy features, like chatting while you're marked as away. If you do try the free version, remember that there are useful things that only come with the pro version, like downloading third-party plugins. My favorite is a POP3 e-mail checker that alerts you of new e-mail right in the Trillian window. There are tons of others, like weather and news.

http://www.im2.com/ is another to add to your list. Not what I use, but two friends rather enjoy it.

DanX I've never seen that IM client before. Since I'm reloading my desktop I'll give it a shot, thanks for sharing!
If you have to operate your company behind the scenes or under a fake name, maybe it's time to leave the industry and start something fresh.

Trillian here also. Don't have any problems (compared to when it first came out).
